Dreamfall: The Longest Journey Reader Review
Where do I start to start reviewing DREAMFALL?
Unfortunately we are living a time where adventure games are not very popular any more and the reasons are crystal clear.
At this point i would like to say that i am a huge fun of the adventure Genre since the days of LucasArts Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, SAM & MAX Hit the road etc.
The reason why adventure games are laying low nowadays is because of the ACTION games released the past years and the RPGs. Titles like FEAR, HALF-LIFE, DOOM3, World of Warcraft, CS, FAR CRY have done brilliantly from a sales point of view so most publishers prefer to shift that way.
For people who love adventure games and are not thrilled by killing monsters, aliens or whatever else, for people who love mystery games these are bad news.
But since the release of SYBERIA 1&2 the adventure genre revived some of its glory. Thanks to Microids everything seems to slowly but steadily change.
More publishers pop out everyday with new adventure games. They may not follow the traditional point and click pattern, instead being 3D and all but still giving us adventure fans what we need. MYSTERY, NICE GRAPHICS, CLEVER PLOT, INVENTORY PUZZLES, and above all many hours of gameplay.
And this brings us to DREAMFALL: THE LONGEST JOURNEY
For people who have played the first Longest Journey i must say that things will look a little out of place at the beginning. I do not want to give any spoilers out but all i have to say is...Give the game a chance it surely deserves it.
The story goes as follows (As appears on www.dreamfall.com).
ZoŽ Castillo is about to get involved in a conspiracy that spans parallel worlds and hundreds of years.Something is affecting our world: static interference disrupts technology, and it seems to be linked to a ghostly presence seen only by a few a presence inhabiting a black house in a wintry landscape. As ZoŽ begins her search for a lost friend, she discovers that there is a magical world behind our own and the search is now on for the one person who may help ZoŽ unravel the dangerous web she has become entangled in.
The game has a brilliant story and plot one of the best i ever encounter so i will rate the story with 9/10
The gameplay is in 3D! So yes you have to use the keyboard just like in Grim Fandango, to make your character move to the direction desired.
The inventory is not very different from the first game and neither the inventory puzzles.
You still need to point & click to get stuff done:)
I would rate the gameplay 8/10 because i prefer the point & click pattern to move around. But its not a major setback you get used to it pretty soon.
The game has some clever puzzles but most of them are pretty straight forward. Experienced adventure players may find them too easy. I mean i finished the game in 3 days and i did not get stuck more than 2 times.
Clues are easy to be found and hotspots are nicely positioned. I would rate the puzzles with 8/10 since they are clever and enjoyable but not very hard.
I really enjoyed the sound of the game. Nice dialogs, nice acting, clear voices, brilliant sound effects, appropriate music, name it and you have it.
The sound gives you the impression that you are actually in the game. If fully absorbs you into the atmosphere and that is something that few adventure tittles have. Straight 10/10 for this one.
The first DREAMFALL had excellent graphics detailed to the last spot. I do not think that anyone can say otherwise. And the same goes for the second game of the series. With the 3D environment the programmers and graphic designers did an awesome job. I could not stop being amazed at every scene of the game. Many where the times that i yelled "Wow", "Oh my god", and "Look at this scenery...." Straight 10/10 again!
Let me just say that this is a BIG game:) And we all like that don't we? I could almost cry when it finished! But to be fair the game is big enough as it should be. No unnecessary scenes or videos or anything. The right portion of videos, "action" and gameplay was incorporated in the game. Most people will be happy with this part of the game i am sure. 10/10 again.
As you can derive from the review i really enjoyed this game. It has all the right ingredients that we adventure fans want! A must buy and a must play! Any true adventure gamer must have this on his shelve. And even non-adventurers should give it a go! 9/10 overall!
