Dragon Quest X coming to Wii News

Wii DS News by Oli Welsh

10 December, 2008

According to Reuters, Square Enix has just announced that the tenth game in its long-running role-playing series Dragon Quest will be coming to Wii. No details on the game were revealed.

It also put a Japanese release date on the next game in the series, which is to be released for the Nintendo DS. Dragon Quest IX will hit Japanese shelves on 28th March next year.

The move to Wii marks something of a homecoming for Dragon Quest, which rivals Final Fantasy for popularity in Japan. The series' first six instalments were first released on Nintendo home consoles, the Famicom and Super Famicoms (NES and SNES). It then jumped to PlayStation and PS2 for the seventh and eighth games.

Square Enix is also currently remaking Dragon Quest IV, V and VI for the DS. Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen was released here back in September.

So they've finally realised that creating games is good and all, but in the end they have to make some money as well...

I never played a single one of those Dragon Quest games so this might be my first one, unless it sucks.

This should certainly count as a hardcore game, assuming it's not just another 4-hour waggle-fest. Doubt they'd do that to a numbered entry in the series though.

This might be the next Wii game I currently assume that I'm going to buy.

With no sign of a new Zelda and the last Mario only coming out last year, this must be the only real Wii title on the horizon that anyone can really care about. Apart from maybe Mad World if thats your cup of tea.

DQVIII is one of my favourite games of all time so I'll definitely get this, although saying that if it IS a wagglefest then I'll just replay DQVIII

This isn't really surprising; I read an interview with the producer of Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker not long ago and he said that the DQ games are produced for the most popular platforms. I'd imagine an uproar to this news from some DQ fans though similar to when people made a thing about IX being a DS game...

This was almost a certainty since the Dragon Quest series is, as a rule, always released on the most popular console. They should be able to make it work well after their experience with DQ Swords.

I wonder why they didn't decide to stick with the DS if it's based on popularity?

I imagine they want to keep the series fresh, there's only so much they can do on the DS and it will have less competition on the RPG starved Wii.

One major reason to keep my wii then. Not that we'll see it a year after it's released. Cannot wait for IX though.

Absolutely fantastic news. I'm looking forward to DQIX on the DS, but I was always a little disappointed that it clearly won't be able to emulate the "epicness" of DQVIII. With the next game coming to Wii that isn't going to be an issue.

as long as we don't have to waggle our wiimotes to attack, all will be well.

Cool, now if only we got a real Final Fantasy to go with it...
Lack of games on Wii is mildly depressing, haven't touched it since Mario Galaxy..

A main series Final Fantasy is unlikely, and it'll probably stay that way until Nintendo produce a console with cutting-edge graphics.

Ultimate Wii dominance in Japan = confirmed. I hear Square Enix are moving to a bigger HQ just so they can fit in all the money this is going to make. Looking forward to it, myself - the Wii could really do with some top class RPGs to help fill out the 'proper games' quota.
@Cloud: There's that FF:CC single-player game coming out some time soonish. That FF enough for ya? ;)

If you don't count Dragon Quest Swords that is...
