Dragon Age sequel in February 2011? News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

12 March, 2010

BioWare has singled out 2nd February 2011 as a significant date for the Dragon Age series.

The numbers "02.01.2011" were printed on a leaflet inside the US Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening retail box, above a familiar blood-red dragon. 1UP took a picture.

There was no accompanying explanation, but this appears to be the "Dragon Age Title TBA" mentioned in EA's Q3 financials in February.

Dragon Age: Origins - Awakening will be released here on Tuesday, 16th March. Expect our review then.

If there is something released I can't imagine it'll be a true sequel. Surely it takes more than a year or so to make a game of Dragon Age's length with that amount of content and polish...

weren't they working on the original for yeeeeears though? if so, its possible they might have had a follow up in the pipeline for some time.

Yes, the game did have surprising amounts of Polish. A myriad of bugs, memory leaks, imbalanced difficulty spikes...

maybe it's another expansion, maybe it's themed monopoly set, maybe an invitation to the lead designers next birthday party

I'd guess that creating the universe, lore, engine, basic concept etc. will have taken ages. Now that all that is in place, things might go a lot quicker.

The date is too far away for it to be just another expansion. Sequel sounds more likely.

But didnt they also mention sometime earlier that DA 2 would look a LOT better than DAO? If they go about a new engine I dont really see a new game being done is 2 years or so.

Even with all that in place, surely you can't make a game like that in a year!? Maybe they have huge amounts of staff or something, or maybe the second game was already half finished by the time the released the first...

This is a similar amount of time Kotor II took to make.

Expect badness.

Well, they're starting from a point where they already have a developed and well fleshed out set of back stories and descriptions of a wider world to play with, and an engine already developed, so it's completely understandable that a second game wouldn't take anywhere near as long as the first.

Mass Effect 2 used the same engine and back stories as the first Mass Effect, but still came out 2.5 years later. And Dragon Age has a lot more content than Mass Effect 2...

But yeah, I'm not saying you or EG are wrong, I'm just surprised (and hoping it doesn't mean a dip in quality).

still haven't picked this up, do it now or wait a bit longer for the 'complete edition'?

got plenty of games to play for a while so no real rush but it does look pretty special

02.01.2011 is not 2nd of February on any calendar. It's either 2nd of January over here, or 1st of February over there.

A pity I can't complete the first game because of how broken it is.

The game has AAA written all over it, but it's a shoddy, technical mess! I can forgive some bugs, random spikes in difficulty and dodgy textures, but as rampant as they are in this game, this news does not leave me in high hopes for a sequel.

Ok. So my PC is old and crappy and can barely handle solitaire let alone recent games. Is it worth getting Dragon Age on my PS3?

The rather talented Obsidian made Kotor II but it's rather against the point. A year is not long enough to make and finish a decent RPG.

Also a year is long enough to make a game when the first one took some 4 years and laid out all the assets and design, locked down the engine etc. Sounds like it's just story building that's taking the time, and good odds on the main plot being penciled in before they even released the first one...

Don't forget that Dragon Age was completed months before it was released. I'd imagine that the second game has already had quite a lot of work done on it. In that case, another year to finish the sequel seems reasonable.

That's a really good point, there's every chance this has been in development quite a while. Same applies to Awakening. Given the shameful quality of the DLC I initially thought Bioware was just going on a mass cash grab but this could all turn out very well indeed.
