I don't understand the screenshots. Is it third person view when you're walking around in the world and top-down when in combat..?

that 3rd person view you are talking about is probably a zoomed in version of that top-down view

as in, the ability to zoom in and out from top down to behind your character/party

The images that IGN had where terrible, but these are much improved. I really like the idea of being in above view for combat and a then a more third-person over the shoulder for walking around.

I'm starting to get excited again :)

"good old aurora"

So is Aurora the engine used for KotOR and Mass Effect? does this mean it;'s going to have the textures load in a few seconds after the geometry? :P

Mass Effect uses the Unreal Engine.

What's a bit bitter is that The Witcher, which uses the old Aurora engine (albeit enhanced) looks significantly better than DA. But then it also had some art direction, which DA seems to lack.

Still, the interface and isometric view look promising.

It looks lovely, I really like the art direction and "vibes" of these shots. Really better than the trailer.

Too bad they're not going with a fixed-angle camera though. I thought camera management was a bit of a pain in NWN 1+2. A fixed camera is better for the designers and playability, see: Infinity Engine games, Diablo, Titan Quest...

Well it definitely looks miles better than the previous screenshots!

And the (one and only) over-the-shoulder perspective screenshot makes me excited. I'm not one for the isometric perspective, really. Give me a third-person camera any time.

The in-game screens look a bit bland although they are much better than the disappointingly mediocre cinematic trailer from a few days ago.

edit: Camera management in The Witcher is a pain, thankfully the rest of the game more than makes up for it.

Got to say I found camera managament in NWN2 (even after the patches) much more problematic than in The Witcher. I played The Witcher with the over-the-shoulder cam though, and NWN2 more from an isometric perspective.

although some people rave about the witcher's art direction i was very dissappointed with its genericness-er-ness (:P) to say the least.

At least bioware know how to give a solid gameplay experience, which cdprojekt could learn from with their click, clickety, click click click combat...

I use the isometric view, it's the constant movement that irritates me the most. Also, the automatic rotation is much slower than holding for instance the middle mouse button and rotating manually. And since I'm already complaining, no vsync option in-game is a serious omission (easily fixed by nHancer, thankfully) and I won't even mention the voice acting! Still, an excellent game. Sorry for the small rant. ;-)

So, Dragon Age...hopefully better than just "meh".

BG2 had a brilliant isometric system going, why the fuck would you break it in the name of 3D?

The more I think about it the more I realise that Blizzard actually have the spot on right idea with Diablo 3.

I've found that the numerous patches have improved the performance significantly, but I'd agree that it's still far from ideal, esepcially for what's on show - not that NWN2 looks bad, but it's not exactly Crysis, either.

These group combat shots definitely have a strong flavour of old-skool Faerun about em.

Oh for a proper BG3 (and no, I don't count BG as a trilogy - ToB was an expansion to SoA, not a sequel thank you very much Bioware!).

But this is definitely looking better as time goes on.
