DQIX issue may delay FFXIII launch News

PlayStation 3 Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

13 February, 2009

Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada has said the Dragon Quest IX delay may cause problems for the release of Final Fantasy XIII.

"The next term's schedule hasn't been fixed yet. Presently, I cannot say what kind of effect we will experience from moving the Dragon Quest IX launch from March to July," Wada told IT Media (spotted by Kotaku) when asked if there will be repercussions. "I cannot say there won't be an effect.

"There is a possibility that [the] Dragon Quest IX delay could affect Final Fantasy XIII," he added

Square Enix plans to launch Final Fantasy XIII exclusivley for PS3 across Japan this year. Europe and North America won't see the sprawling role-playing game until sometime after April 2010.

However, Square Enix won't begin work on the Western Xbox 360 version until the PS3 game has safely launched in Japan. That means that, if the publisher sticks with plans of a simultaneous Xbox 360/PS3 launch in West, we could be waiting even longer.

Still, fresh information for Final Fantasy XIII has begun to trickle out, lead by the arrival of a brand new trailer showing battle gameplay and sumptuous CGI scenes.

Japan will be treated to a Final Fantasy XIII demo next month as part of the Blu-ray release of Advent Children: Complete. There's no word on a Western release yet.

"exclusivley" Must admit I only spotted this when reading the piece again, which is probably how it was left in. :)

Not sure I agree with the article, it doesn't neccessarily mean people would be waiting any longer in the West, rather they don't want to release two highly anticipated games around the same time in Japan. It really all depends on how any delay period will be used.

I own an Xbox and not a PS3 and would even say don't wait to release the PS3 version until the Xbox version is ready.

If they're doing that then it looks like MS must've got their wallets out again.

There may be an English Asian version though for PS3 though so worth keeping an eye out.

Dragon Quest VIII

I think Valkyria Profile 2 Slimeria was launched after that, but I don't know if you meant internally SE developed or one of their teams, that flag the SE banner.

As I've said in other threads around FF XIII, I don't really care about it much anymore. I have the impression the series peaked a long time ago from a gameplay perspective. And while as a lover of JRPGs it takes many hours of performing repetitive actions to get me bored with a title, FF as a series has managed to pass my boredom threshold. Nowadays I prefer the lower budget titles of Atlus/Nippon Ichi.

But I still hope Square will be able to surprise me and move the JRPG forward with XIII.

As much as I'm looking forward to DQIX on the DS (and I really am looking forward to it!) I'm still a bit disappointed it won't look or sound as amazing as DQVIII on the PS2 did :'/

As for the delay: meh! FF mainline series games are always, always, always delayed and I've learned to accept that as a fact of gaming life :(

"go play 'Lost Odyssey' - it's made by the Final Fantasy creator"

That's a bit misleading because Sakaguchi really had very little to do with what Final Fantasy is known for today (namely, the instalments on the PlayStation).

Why does it take a year for it to be released here after Japan? Far too much of a delay.
