Doom Classic launches on iPhone

Thy cash consumed.

id Software has finally released Doom Classic for the iPhone. You can grab it now for £3.99.

Not to be confused with Doom Resurrection, Doom Classic is the original PC first-person shooter reborn with several control schemes and all four original episodes for a total of 36 levels.

It also supports wireless multiplayer for up to four people.

Which is all great, but does it have infrequent/mild sexual content or nudity? Probably not. Unless you count the Cyber Demon.

£3.99 price is an epic fail. Same with Earth worm Jims price point. This retro stuff should be 99p at best rather than this Nintendofied price scamming that's going on.

I was paying more than £3.99 for a beer on Friday night to be fair

£3.99 sounds spot on to me. Not that i have an Iphone mind.

But yes, I'm used to the Wii Shop's prices so anything's a bargain, including £3.99 for a pint.

It's a little steep even for a classic, but when you consider the XBLA was the same price, it isn't so bad.

Let's see... Bought Doom on PC, Doom on PSone, Doom on Super Nintendo, Doom on GBA, Doom on Xbox Live Arcade and now they want me to get Doom for the iPod Touch/ iPhone???!!!

    Alright then.

Damn you id Software (and damn me for getting sucked in yet again!).

Is there to be a lite version, like wolfenstein?
  • wizlon #7 2 years ago

£3.99 isn't too bad, and MrEd, Doom is still awesome today, admit it!
  • bodypopper #8 2 years ago

Doom was all about the multiplayer really but none of my game-liking Touch owning buddies will ever buy this.
    Shame.

Please not again. I've played this game. In the year 1980 or something like that. It was ok back then. No thanks not in 2009.

If its a good port then £3.99 sounds like a bargain

@ Beep, Ditto! ive done the same thing (owned DOOM for PS1, N64, 360 and urrmm cough cough the Jaguar)
ya just cant have enough of doom, its good for the sole.

I wonder whats happned to the extra levels promised for the XBLA.
  • ebony69 #11 2 years ago

Cant imagine how a FPS could ever work on a handheld, esp the iphone/itouch without shoulder buttons to strafe.
Doom Resurrection however great - as it knew this and came up with a completely different control mechanism.

Think I have Doom on everything now.

    MegaDrive (32X), SNES, Jaguar, 3DO, PS1, Nintendo64, 360, and now iPhone. Damn.

Pretty sure I missed something also.
  • altitude2k #13 2 years ago

£4 for the full game with 4-way multiplayer = win for me. Shame I don't have an iPhone, though.

Four original episodes? So this is Ultimate Doom then, rather than the original, which had three?

I'm confused now. Anyway, if they were doing this properly they'd release the first episode as a demo :)
  • Eldritch #15 2 years ago

Not available in Germany! COME ON!

'Four original episodes? So this is Ultimate Doom then, rather than the original, which had three? '

Yeah, it's Ultimate Doom, with Thy Flesh Consumed added.

Pocketgamer just gave it a 7 - control issues apparently.

If I had an iPhone I would still buy it (for the billionth time).

Can't wait for the Doom 2 xbla release this autumn. For some reason these games stay incredibly addictive.

Not too sure about shooters on touch only devices though. Not really the interface for them. Adventures on the other hand...
  • WJF #19 2 years ago

For all PC owners there's still the excellent Doomsday pack available that updates the graphics with real time lighting, 3d models etc. Need the original game first of course.

Worth it for a bit of old skool action without the eyes bleeding. Still a great game for a quick blast

    @chukcyQ
if you really didn't want to play doom then i'm pretty sure you could find a way to do that.

Been playing this for a couple of days, it's a pretty good port. Unlike Duke Nukem all the music is present and correct, and there's no slowdown either.

My main gripe is the controls. Wolf3D worked perfectly without really needing a strafe control, so it was simple left stick for fowards/backwards/turn left/turn right and a fire button on the right side of the screen. This scheme is in Doom as well, but it's not as successful. Obviously with Doom there were rooms full of enemies and strafing becomes much more important. There's a dual stick control scheme like modern shooters with movement on the left and look left/right on the right, but this makes the fire button hard to reach in the top right corner. Even on the easiest difficulty it's hard to kill a Cyberdaemon like that.

I think if John Carmack can think about implementing some sort of strafe on the right fire button, so you can strafe when firing I think it would solve it. It's still definitely worth a buy, especially for the effortless multiplayer it has. You can literally be up and fragging in 15 seconds.

C&C Red Alert is also out, but like most EA games it's been rushed out for Christmas and so is full of bugs and runs like shit on anything that's not an iPhone 3GS.

WJF: Meh, the original graphics look much nicer imo. I wouldn't have it any other way.
  • Wyrm #23 2 years ago

£4 is very reasonable. Great version, seems to play far better than Duke 3D.

I tend to keep the original models on but turn on lens flare! Mmm, lens flare.
