DJ Hero DLC pricing explained

Basically, it costs more to make.

DJ Hero downloadable content costs more than Guitar Hero downloadable content because it costs more to produce, according to developer FreeStyleGames.

Individual tracks for Guitar Hero 5 currently cost 160 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live, or £1.59 / €1.99 on PSN, whereas the first DLC for DJ Hero - a two-mix affair called Extended Mix Pack 01 - costs 480 MSP, or £4.79 / €5.99, suggesting individual mixes will run deeper up in your wallet yo.

"There's additional work in the creation process of the DJ Hero DLC - licensing multiple pieces of content and bringing in a professional DJ to mix the tracks - that brings the price [to these levels]," FSG's commercial director Chris Lee told IGN.

The two mixes in the Extended Mix Pack, which came out last week, were a mashup of Mary J. Blige's "All of Me" and Queen's "Radio Ga Ga", and a clash between "DARE" by Gorillaz and Public Enemy's "Can't Truss It" (check out the latter on Eurogamer TV).

The next DLC is the David Guetta Mix Pack 01, featuring three remixes, which will cost 640 MSP on Xbox Live and $7.99 on PSN (which probably translates to £5.49 / €7.99). Expect that on 24th November.

Buying tracks for guitar hero and rock band were a bit of a no brainer as so cheap - start to up the price a bit and it becomes a whole different thing. I hope people that like dance music are REALLY into their gaming and have lots of money - otherwise this whole thing really isnt going to work.

If it costs that much to make 2 mixes, shouldn't the stand alone game (minus turntable) cost in the region of £200 - £250???
Wow £90 really was a bargain...

This money-sucking business should stop. I'm more and more getting the feeling that publishers and developers are making and designing games with those features that allows them to make as much cash as they can now and in the future rather than giving the consumer the best possible and most fun experience. DLC at launch, missing songs (cf Beatles RB), this, MW2, etc etc.

Sometimes when deciding on which game to buy, I'm more thinking about who's ripping me off the most, rather than looking forward to the magic of starting up a new game. Luckily not all is lost yet!

If you have to justify and explain your prices this much, maybe you should be looking at why you feel the need to?

It's royalties on the samples that costs money - hence why Avalanches have a new album ready to release, if they could afford to!

I hope this all fails miserably...

@b00n: publishers will continue to push DLC as it adds to the revenue stream for a game, unfortunate but unavoidable really. The only DLC I have ever bought was the Metal Gear Solid expansion pack for Little Big Planet. That is how you make DLC worthwhile.

DLC for (say) Battlefield Bad Company would be better being additional weapon types, new uniforms, etc rather than map packs. It would be Action Man for console generation. :)
