Disney throws Turok sequel in the bin News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Ellie Gibson

30 January, 2009

Bad news for anyone who enjoyed last year's Turok game on PC, PS3 or Xbox 360 - word is the sequel has been cancelled.

That's according to Kotaku, which reported Disney Interactive is making around 70 employees redundant from developer Propaganda Games.

Turok 2 was never officially announced, but apparently it was one of two projects in development. Propaganda will continue to work on the other one, and there are still job ads on its website.

Disney exec Steve Wadsworth has since confirmed the report, stating that the company is looking for ways to increase efficiency "given economic conditions". Along with redundancies, these will include a freeze on hiring new staff, reductions in travel and entertainment expenses and no pay rises for top execs.

Oh, what a shame. The new Turok was entirely original and not at all like pretty much every other jugle FPS but with added dinosaurs.

Okay, I might not be giving it as much credit as it's due (loved the stealth kills), but it's still too generic. Especially if you consider the ingenuity of the N64 games, with cool weapons and a non-sapce marine star.

Sad news for the developers, but my heart bleeds for those execs who aren't getting their pay rise too... Oh wait, no it doesn't.

That said, I'm not sure the loss of Turok 2 is a big thing.

The last one had some potential so it's a shame to stop them making an improvement.

The original Turok on the N64 is still the best. Sadly, games with maze like levels don't sell anymore these days even though they are awesome :/

I'm sure both of them will be devastated.

I'm not saying it's a bad game, I'm just saying I enjoyed the N64 Turoks more. I mean, the Cerebral Bore
is one of gamings finest weapons. If the sequel was going to have that, then it is indeed a sad loss.

I'm forgetting the human angle too, it's a shame anyone has to lose their jobs. Even if I fell Turok was a bit generic, everyone deserves another chance.

It reminded me of Haze. Generic, enclosed, linear, dull, cack voices, naff character models, clunky controls...no great loss.

All that potential was pretty much fulfilled twelve years ago. They shouldn't have needed two goes to work out what made the original Turok stand out from the crowd with their reboot of the franchise.

Sad news for the guys who lost their jobs, but at least the god awful series of games may finally die. Every cloud...

This is a bittersweet news item, it's a shame anyone has to lose their job but I'm glad this franchise is (for) now dead.

Turok 1 was a great start, Turok 2 was pretty special, although I never finished it as I reached the longest check point in the world and could never get to the next one.

It's the first game I remember heads being completely blown off with a sniper, leaving the body to drop - Gears does it in a similar way now. :) And the Cerebral Bore was awesome.

My first thought on this is who the hell thought another Turok sequel was a good idea?

If that person HADN'T thought a Turok sequel was a good idea, maybe 70 people would have been working on something else, something that wouldn't get cancelled, something that wouldn't result in them losing their jobs.

Going by the demo the guns were useless, it was worth taking the risk each time to run in with your knife!

Damn, I wanna try the original (360) one now. Being hard fightin' hard fartin' ugly ugly Turok and stabbing dinosaurs to death sounds entertaining.
