Disgaea 3 announced for PS3

Excellent RPG series grows.

Japanese developer Nippon Ichi has unveiled the third Disgaea role-playing game - and this time it's for PlayStation 3.

But despite the leap in technology, early screenshots show little graphical improvement over the PS2 versions.

Not that it was ever really about the graphics, mind you, but unfortunately details of the new project are sparse, and Koei - Nippon Ichi's usual European distributor - had nothing to add.

We expect there will be little change on the strategical turn-based role-playing formula, which earned the first two games a splendid 9/10 from Eurogamer.

Nippon Ichi is also currently working on a PSP version of Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, due for release next year.

Head over to our Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and Disgaea 2 reviews to find out more.

I love the look of these games n mates said they were great... but i never had a PS2....

I'm mixed about this, on one hand it looks like a PS2 game (not much because the 1st looked like PS1 game etc) and could probably make a great PSN game like Beautiful Katamary, on the other hand 100 hour RPG's are just about the only genre i feel justified enough to pay the full RRP of £40/£50 for.

    Damn.

If the gameplay is as good as the first two anyone who doesn't buy it because of the graphics doesn't deserve it.

so are details of its screens ;)

I own both of the previous versions and love them to death. But they do really need to step up their game graphically. If you own a PS3 this just wont cut it. This could probably be done on PS2 if you look at the screens.

Don't get me wrong, I like the style. But this just screams lazy. And no way I'm buying them same game a third time if it doesn't step it up. Well, maybe it will improve.

Fantastic :) Glad they've kept the style the same, some hi def 2D sprites would be awsome.
  • Mox #10 5 years ago

I wish they'd do it on the PS2 instead ... I wonder how many games-I-want it will take to get me to buy a PS3?

I'm stuck inbetween two places, Sony's current business model allow cheaply made proper games to go on PSN (Warhawk, Socom, Tekken DR etc) and full retail games go through the traditional channel (Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, MGS4 etc).

My grey area would be RPG's while they could be cheaply made like the Katamary Darmacy kind, they usually have enough depth to last at least 100 hours justifying the full price to me.

Ah hell who am I kidding I'll get this game day one nevertheless, but it is an interesting situation of what I've come to expect from Sony's gaming business plans.

Check out the amazing Play.com deal. I just ordered one!

eh? this game could look fantastic in high res...I'm all for keeping it 2D/isometric 3D but up the res...geez! imaging how sexy this could look in 1080p, even 720p would be gorgeous!

The only way that they'd be amazing deals would be if they were giving them away for free!

    Anything else is daylight robbery!

great news, i'll def pick this up with a PS3 next year
  • Raziel #17 5 years ago

Think they just sold me a PS3... Just for this...
  • aabyssx #18 5 years ago

For PS3?!? Why?!? How does Disgaea benefit from being on PS3?

I want it on handheld (DS or PSP).
  • ecureuil #19 5 years ago

There's already Disgaea on PSP and DS.

This is good news, and I'm glad they're sticking with the similar graphical style, rather than trying to go overboard with the graphics just because it's on a more powerful console. This is the stage in gaming we need to be at - where developers create games exactly how they want, rather than polygon pushing at every hardware increment.

While the graphics are not an issue as such, they do little to justify it being a £45-50 PS3 game rather than a £30 PS2 one or is that fact that the publishers can sell it for an extra £15-£20 more the real reason it's on the PS3? ;)

It is possible that the game uses more than 9 GB of space and so requires Blu-ray but looking it, it doesn't seem very likely, does it?

Why does every game have to be about the graphics? As long as the artwork is solid and its running in 720p/1080p native, I couldn't care less. If I want to look at amazing visuals there are countless other games I can turn to, this one is all about the playing.

  • aine #23 5 years ago

They could have easily done it on the PS2, then it'd be compatible with the PS3 anyway (in the US and Japan at least) and I'd be able to play it. grr.
  • aabyssx #24 5 years ago

Disgaea Hour of Darkness was released for PSP in Japan only. There is no English version.

I don't see why it wouldn't be a PS2 game then. I don't want them to change the style, but at least the could make the sprites look less like PS1 games. Like the new SF HDS indeed. These screens show no change at all. And a great game is a great game, but how does making it look better make it worse?

I do have to stare at the shit for 100 hours!

*sigh* This really is a worst-of-both-worlds situation. NIS don't seem to have substantially upgraded their tech, so it's basically the same base they used for all their fantastic PS2 games... BUT they've ported it to PS3 putting it out of reach for people like me who have near-zero interest in buying one.

I figured NIS's logic for developing for PS2 was that it was the widest install base and so least likely to hurt doing the niche games they do. But I guess not. Here I was hoping they'd jump ship to Wii / DS :(

    Well, if it ain't broke...

I hope this doesn't hit for a while. I can't afford a PS3 at the moment, and based off experience with the previous NIS titles, this is one that if you don't buy it around launch you'll never see it again unless you're willing to trade a kidney for it on ebay.

This might work better on PSN than as a full retail game, to be honest. I'm surprised they're going for the PS3 at all, technolgically it seems a better fit for the Wii, especially given that the Wii is selling far better in Japan.
