Disaster: Day of Crisis coming in October News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

2 September, 2008

Nintendo plans to release Wii title Disaster: Day of Crisis in Europe on 24th October. My birthday.

Created by Xenosaga-brain Monolith, the idea is to save the world from terrorists who are cheekily using natural disasters as diversions. Raymond Bryce - a retired, traumatised, but decorated US marine who now rescues people - must achieve all this in just 24 hours. Sounds rather familiar. Blip... Blop... Blip... Blop...

Action appears to be split into two areas, combat and rescue. Survival points will be awarded for hauling civilians out of disaster zones and can be spent on upgrading various related abilities. Battle points will be gifted for shooting baddies and can subsequently be spent on relative skills.

Rescues will involve flapping the Wiimote and Nunchuk around, while combat will be played out in an on-rails fashion as you blast and pummel your opponents.

Various unlockable weapons and difficulty levels should stretch gameplay out, apparently, as will a shooting range and added Stamina campaign.

Head over to our Disaster: Day of Crisis gallery to see what you're up against.

This looks pretty awful from what I've seen. The graphics are also rough for a first-party game.

Didn't they announce this game about 2 1/2 years ago. Why is this the first we've heard since then?

TYhat's out of the blue. I wonder if it's been rushed to respond to recent criticisms about Nintendo's perceived lack of support for the core gamer.

I was really hoping that this would be one of the SOS series, instead it sounds like... Well, 'not very good'. Why is there the constant need for terrorists when there are plenty of exciting dangerous situations that have no terrorists involved?

"Rescues will involve flapping the Wiimote and Nunchuk around." So, that's pretty much like every other average Wii game then? There are some good ones, but most of them seem to use gestures that can't be replicated with the Wiimote, so instead rely on vague and confusing flailing. Ho hum.

Still, the SOS series is good fun, so maybe this will be okay.

"Disaster: Day Of Crisis" sums up the day I spent my hard earned cash on a Wii console.

Oh dear... this game looked and sounded far more interesting when it was announced back in 2006, but then we didn't know a lot about it.

The escape sequences seem to be QTE-based, with you waggling the Wiimote around. The shooting scenes are supposed to be on-rails, probably similar to Time Crisis. As for the rescue stuff it might be a bit more original, but I still fear it'll just descend into the usual "collection of minigames" syndrome that plagues so many Wii games.

What series? I thought the only one was the PS2 version? What other versions are there?

Looks pretty decent to me considering it's a Wii title.

@Baz: There was one sequel. It got reasonable reviews, but I don't think it got a release in the West.

If it has ManBearPig as a boss, that would push it up on my want list big time.

MY WORD I need to import the other SOS title. Played Final Escape, was possibly one of the most original and addictive games I have ever played.

If this Wii one matches up to it, I'm sold...
