No, it's because you have V-Sync on so the max FPS the game ever reaches is 60! Even though your output can only display 60fps, you can still disable V-Sync so your PC can generate as many FPS as it possibly can; and this will gain you top grades.

Hey Richard, there's a cfg file for the Resident Evil 5 benchmarker that has SLI set to 'off'. If you haven't already you can switch that to 'ON' and get a nice boost in framerates with your GTX 295.

There is also a setting for the numbers of threads, for the core i7's with H/T it should be set to '7'.

I'm really not keen on Nvidia's way of doing stereoscopic 3D, as it alternates blacking out one of the lenses in their 3D glasses to show/hide a frame to each eye.

I much prefer using polarised lenses to the flickering method, although obviously the polarised approach also requires an expensive special screen. I did try Nvidia's system at the Gadget Show and it worked well, but the flickering was already starting to be annoying after just a minute or so.

Edit: Just tried the benchmark and I get an average of 40fps on my laptop with an 8800 GTX-M at 1440x900 with everything on max except 2xAA. Looks really nice, it's just a shame the game was so crap.

Benchmark seems to be CPU limited.

Direct X 9.0, fixed benchmark on my rig (e8400@stock, 8800 GT 512mb, 2 GB RAM) with all settings maxed:

1280x720 no AA, vsync off: 46.6 fps
1440x900 C16xQ, vsync on: 44.4 fps

I can't notice the difference between 40 and 60 fps so I'm satisfied regardless. Still, doesn't look like a CPU taxing game so the results were surprising. The game apparently 'runs great on an i7'... I call shenanigans!

Ok, I ran it again after a restart and got more reasonable numbers. Max settings, 1440x900, vsync off:

Less bizarre this time around, although the fixed results certainly don't jive with the variable results with the former still suggesting cpu limitation.

How can you not know that the score is based on maximum FPS, and in your case, maximum FPS is limited by V-Sync. I mean, this is very simple thing everyone, especially a writer in DigitalFoundry section, should have known. If you want to bench the game properly, just disable V-Sync and unlock maximum frame cap (unlimited). I'm sure the system that fast would get an "S".

By the way, does anyone notice the absence of heat haze effect in this benchmark? You can see it in the first cutscene (part 1) but in gameplay section (part 2) it's completely disappear. I compared it side by side with my X360 version and it's clear that that effect is nowhere to be found in PC (benchmark) version.

Sorry... my mistake (but what I say still applies anyway). The score actually is based on average FPS, BUT as your maximum FPS is locked at 60, there is no way that your average FPS will be greater than 60. The cap in maximum FPS results in inaccurate performance benchmark, as you can't go higher than 60, but every frame-drop is taken into account in calculating average FPS.

This is why the average FPS you saw in this article is lower than 60.

What's the point in running a benchmark with v-sync ON?!? :?

I only have a Core i7 and a GTX 280 graphics card and I get 66 fps at 1920x1200 with 8X MSAA. Obviously it drops slightly if I v-sync it but I compensate that by using triple buffering via RivaTuner's D3DOverrider tool. Basically it looks like I'll be able to play this game at 1920x1200 on max. settings with insane amounts of AA and get over twice the framerate of the console versions. That's great.

Incidentally this benchmark seems to assume you're using the 3D googles to you'll only get an S rating (optimal) if you achieve over 100 fps (which I can if I disable AA). That's because the googles rely on two frames being rendered so sans the goggles an S rating would normally be achieved at 60 fps or more as happens with Devil May Cry 4 for example. There's absolutely no real benefit to playing RE5 at more than 60 fps anyway, it's already twice as smooth as the console versions.

Handy little thing, i now know how much AA does and doesnt effect my fps. With 4x AA everything else maxxed i get 45fps average, with 2x AA alll else maxxed i get 49.9fps this is with the varible demo so i can see how workls in game.

At no point did it go below 40 fps from what i saw. So miles better looking than consoles and higher fps, win win.

I would rather have v-sync than go above 60 FPS because I find that once you get above that it's just diminishing returns. Also, I play on a 50" plasma, so I can only go up to 60 FPS over HDMI anyway.

I'm confused, does using an HDMI output somehow limit framerate? I can imagine it might limit the screen's refresh rate, but surely the game will run at whatever frame rate your system is capable of, as long as you disable v-synch? Surely diminishing returns are irrelevant - isn't this supposed to be a benchmark?
