Deus Ex 3 session at GDC in March

How a 'Cyber Renaissance' world is made.

Deus Ex 3 will be the subject of an entire Games Developer Conference 2010 lecture this March.

Eidos Montreal's art director Jonathan Jacques-Belletete will blabber on about "The Successes and Failures of Creating a Near-Future Cyberpunk Setting with a Renaissance Twist in Deus Ex 3."

He'll pay particular attention to the "Cyber Renaissance" look that is "infused across fashion, characters, environments and story", wrote the GDC website.

Deus Ex 3 will be at the show, then, and possibly viewable. And we'll also be at the show. Let's hope those two elements collide. Deus Ex 3 is in development for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

There are other talks going on GDC, which takes place from 9th to 13th March in San Francisco.

Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka (who has just joined No More Heroes developer Grasshopper) will talk about his career in the industry, and Batman: Arkham Asylum's Rocksteady is discussing rebooting a superhero videogame IP.

Keep up to date with the other talks on the GDC website.

Please make this more 1 than 2. That is all I want to say on this matter...

Great news! I can't wait to hear more about Deus Ex 3!
  • ignatiusjreilly #3 2 years ago

I was going to post something cynical but I shall try and be positive. I hope this is great :)

Last time we heard about deus ex 3, it was a cover based third person shooter with recharging health/shields and only crude stealth elements. I don't have a lot of faith that we'll see anything that isn't just a mediocre game cashing in on the name.
  • Murton #5 2 years ago

I fear that "abigsmurf" may be right on that one, throw in that Squenix has put some of the FF artists into creating cut scenes for DX3 and it seems very far removed from the first game that is much beloved by all.

Like reilly I really want to be excited about this game but until we know some more about it I'm going to remain sceptical, it's just been too long, I fear this could end up being too much of "what's popular right now" and not enough of what made the first one great.
  • Stop-gap #6 2 years ago

Cutscene artists? Really? That makes me worry, a good engine will do it's own cutscenes very nicely usually. You know, like in that obscure Deus Ex game which no one likes :p
  • PearOfAnguish #7 2 years ago

I'm concerned about it too, though GameSpy compiled a list of features based on the small amount of information that's been made available, and it sounds fairly promising, if a little too good to be true.
  • Svalbaard #8 2 years ago

I've been waiting for more news on this for ages and can't wait to see what they have come up with, although I agree with Murtons post - the other two were great because they had such immersive plotlines and there is a fear that this just going to blend in with a whole host of other bland FPSs'.

However, the amount of "no-news" time elapsed since first announcement hopefully means that they have been crafting something special.

The Batman AA session could be quite interesting. I know it's not meant for public but I would loved to go to GDC. Maybe there be an official write up of all the sessions and it could get released as a high quality book/magazine?

    Be good.
    Be good.
    Be good.

Andromeda seems to be in the fetal position.
  • Murton #12 2 years ago

@ Pearofanguish: the features list can be taken either way, without knowing how these features are being implemented we can't really say much, they do look promising though.

Gotta say though I'm concerned that the list contains several redundancies, the first two features listed for example are two different ways of saying the same thing as are the words "semi-open world approach to levels/missions"

Also reading the official FAQ in game cutscenes are rendered in the engine while things like intro movies and trailers will be done by Enix in their engine. That lifts some of my concerns regarding how that side of things being handled anyway.

be ready for recharging health and shields, readily available ammo, no hacking or lockpicking, and minimal customisation in all areas!

hopefully none of these things will be in the game, as i really would love another great deus ex game, but just be ready, thats all.
  • Murton #14 2 years ago

Hacking and lockpicking are confirmed but no details on how these will look in game.

If you click the link supplied by Pearlofanguish you can see the features list and a link to the official FAQ on the Eidos forums. It looks like they're trying hard to capture the magic of the original but most fans are sceptical as to whether or not it can be done, it's been a hell of a long time since the first DX and DX:IW was just terrible. The deck is really stacked against Eidos on this one, but just think how happy you're going to be if they actually pull it off, though admittedly it is a very big "if"
  • PearOfAnguish #15 2 years ago

IW wasn't terrible at all, it just didn't stack up next to DX. Taken on its own it's a great game.
  • Kanjin #16 2 years ago

If the actions passable I'm ok with that. It's if there's no triple-layered conspiracy that'll I'll be disappointed
  • Stop-gap #17 2 years ago

While IW wasn't terrible per se, compared to the first it was awkward and not very interesting.
Most of the hate for it (on the PC anyway) stems from its cretinously horrid UI and general slow performance, both things which should have been avoided pretty easily. I completely understand why people are worrying about the quality of DX3 suffering from having every last tedious flavour-of-the-month game mechanic rammed in there in place of creativity, continuity and other daft things which you can't add to a feature list.
I'd also put serious money on it being at most half as big as DX, if you tried to see it all, that game was pleasingly MASSIVE :)

I read any article about Deus Ex 3 with a semi.

    Deux Ex 3 ?

I am not aware of any sequel....
  • Jelly_Head #20 2 years ago

Ah... what I wouldn't give to see the original Deus Ex remade for PS3/Xbox360 with the latest Unreal engine!

Not very interested in this "sequel" unless it's similar to, but better than, the original game.
  • YoungPayters #21 2 years ago

i love the GDC, everyone seems a lot more frank about the business. its all about the developers talking and not some fuck wit PR fool faffing on about how this game "will change ur life" and all that craic.

Yup, save that shit for E3.

[/i]I am not aware of any sequel....[/i]

Loving the denial, I do that with the trilogies: Star Wars, Indy and Alien, 9 classic movies right there.

This better be awesome... I haven't recovered from the crushing disappointment of DE2 yet.
