It will never be able to match what the first one did. Moments like the section in your brothers flat can't be recreated, we hadn't seen that kinda thing in a game before.

    Please prove me wrong.

I must get around to finishing Deus Ex one of these days...
  • NegativeZero #3 4 years ago

It'll never hit the same level as the original, but as long as it's a big step up from the gigantic disappointment that was Deus Ex 2, I don't think I mind.
  • Wobble #4 4 years ago

more like 1, less like 2 pls. :)
  • peteb #5 4 years ago

great news! although i hope it comes to consoles around the same time, i abandoned my aging pc years ago!
  • Wite_Noiz #6 4 years ago

OMFG! How long have I waited to see that announcement?!

While I hope they can do something along the lines of 1, I don't see how it could compete in today's market.
Deus Ex had an immense and gripping story on top of the gameplay, which is something that we are seeing a lot more of nowadays.

Gah! I need to find 40+ hours to go back and play 1 again.
  • Xiaokiraa #7 4 years ago

I wonder if it'll be as bad as Deus Ex II...
  • KingOfSpain #8 4 years ago

II wasn't that bad TBH. It was a lot better than most games that came out that year but it got panned because it wasn't as good as the first.

If they dropped the Deus EX name from the front I think it would be remembered a lot better.
  • Katsumoto #9 4 years ago

Yup - see the forum thread for more. People would never have been satisfied unless by some miracle it surpassed the first. IW was still a great game in its own right. I have less hopes for this as Spector/Smith aren't on board.
  • Olemak #10 4 years ago

Deus Ex is one of those great games that I never played, for some reason. I guess I should really pick it up, even though it is getting pretty long in the tooth.
  • sickpuppysoftware #11 4 years ago

@peteb - I'm the opposite. I hope they develop it for the PC first and then try and work out how to cram it on consoles afterwards.

I don't want the wishy washy mess of 2 again.
  • mkreku #12 4 years ago

No. No, Deus Ex: Invisible War really wasn't "a great game in its own right". I remember having to review it back then and the first thing that struck me was how often the game had to load stuff (constant loading screens), tiny maps, idiotic design decisions (unified ammo for all weapons? WTF??), unoptimized engine, consolitis (for the PC version), annoying interface (a huge circle that's constantly blocking your view of the world???), etc. The game was deeply flawed no matter how you looked at it.

On top of that it WAS a huge letdown from the first game, especially in the way the story was presented, the quality of the story, the characters, the locations you traveled to, the way NONE of your choices had any real consequences, how the VERY LAST choice you made in the game decided which ending you'd get and so on and so forth.

They not only made a bad game in Deus Ex: Invisible War, they also raped the Deus Ex franchise.
  • Flipit #13 4 years ago

    Best news all year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Xiaokiraa #14 4 years ago

The problem with Deus Ex IW is that it stripped away everything that made the original so good. I wouldn't have minded if they didnt bring it out under the franchise, but in my eyes very disappointing. As an average shooter it was great fun.

    Edit: Mkreku understands me lol

    i actually liked 2...

Im just glad this has been announced as after 2 (which ill re-iterate that i liked) they said that they probably wouldn't do another (which was a shame).

    So yay!

  • Evolution #20 4 years ago

The original was a brilliant gem with some minor flaws, Invisible War was a terrible successor. Deus Ex 3, no Warren Spector, oh dear...

Aye. That was incredibly lame alright.
Although I did enjoy the game that decision left a bit of a bad taste.
  • andromeda #23 4 years ago

for a start , brand new engine, Unreal 2 made DEIW run like shit , even on a good rig.
the tech is more than capable these days to do it justice.
I think also in the current climate, it should be made for consoles first, which i wouldnt have said a few years back :)

Where I am: DX1 was brilliant aside from a few pacing problems.

DX2 was reasonably enjoyable while it lasted but suffered more flaws, was too short, and whatever else. It was in essence a slightly better than average game. What it absolutely failed to do though was recreate the feel and atmosphere of DX1. If it had managed to do that, then the other flaws could have been forgiven. Half life 2 is a good example of how to make a sequel feel 'right' even with a wide gap in time/technology. DX2 isn't.

Oh, and yeah - unified ammo was rubbish. Completely removed those moments in the game where you're forced to improvise with less than ideal weaponry because you're out of ammo in your main ones.

Still, it's not as if DX2 was that well recieved, so they might learn from this for 3!
  • RexRunti #26 4 years ago

How involved was Spector in the frist game? As I recall he was concentrating on Daikatana (bloody terrible) at the time and Deus Ex sprung from no where, or at least another team at the same company. I'm hoping a team of developers who were fans of the original could really make an amazing game (ala Tomb Raider: Legend).

The only things to change are the cheesiness of the plot and to give the player a better choice in who you work for (if I want to be a facist and date Anna Naverra it should let me) but don't do it like the second game which made your choices feel irrelavant.

There's potential for some very atmospheric, bladerunneresque stuff with the tech available these days.

I'm chuffed, because DX was awesome - playing Bioshock at the mo and keep thinking "this is a bit like DX but not QUITE as good". I just hope - like most people - it's more like the first game, and not as much like the interesting-but-flawed Invisible War.

Which I suppose I'd better hurry up and complete, now!
  • Machetazo #30 4 years ago

"The problem with Deus Ex IW is that it stripped away everything that made the original so good."

I thought the problem with Invisible War was that it was a part of a full game (DX2), which they then had to sculpt into a full game in its own right? There was Clan Wars, which then changed to Project Snowblind (which would have formed the multiplayer part of DX2) then the singleplayer part was left to stand on its lonesome as DX: Invisible War. Isn't that how it was?

    Bring Thief 4, thanks Eidos.
  • Tomo #31 4 years ago

Stephane Disasterous? That doesn't bode well for the game's future...
  • Biggles #32 4 years ago

wait, wasn't it a single decision at the end which determined the ending in the first game too?

I thought IW was ok, but didn't quite do it for me the same way as the first. Anyway, here's hoping they score a really excellent writer or two for this one, probably the most important thing for this kind of game.
  • NthSimulachum #33 4 years ago

Why don't they get Warren Ellis to write it?

    Oh yeah. America. Censors.

"I don't give two tugs of a dead dogs cock about bio mods, Jaime. Now pull down your pants."

They better have seperate ammo, and a better interface this time.
  • kangarootoo #34 4 years ago

    The truth.
  • bad09 #35 4 years ago

The first was a brilliant gaming experience, so as long as they look to that for inspiration and not the disappointing sequel I'll buy it!
  • kangarootoo #36 4 years ago

I do agree that the unified ammo decision was pure madness though :)
  • Destria #37 4 years ago

You're thinking of John Romero. He was the Daikatana guy. Warren Spector was in charge of that other team at the same company (based in a different city. Austin to Romero's Dallas).

"I must get around to finishing Deus Ex one of these days... "
    - Ditto

Expect this to get dummeb down for PC as it will no doubt be ported to X360 and PS3 in addition to at being unoptimised for PC AND it will likely be released on the consoles before PC. I would like be proven wrong on those points however as the potential is enormous!
  • Crea #39 4 years ago

Unified ammo was the least of DE:IW's woes.

I remember the final level on liberty island being split into something like 4 zones, and being smaller overall, than the original and just thinking 'this isn't how things are meant to be with a sequel, surely...'.
  • Duke_Red #40 4 years ago

    Philosophy in games rocks!!!

    Intelligent gaming here we come
  • gnarl #41 4 years ago

Having played both games at the same time, I preferred the second. So much less repetition, and just generally more interesting. The first game felt like such a chore. Not that Invisible War couldn't have done better, although the ammo never bothered me, but the areas could have definitely been bigger.

I expect this to go the way of Bioshock in comparison to SS2. Though a lot of people seemed to like that, so there you go. Guess we'll find out in 2010.
  • Raiten #42 4 years ago

I truly hope Eidos would be smart enough to first do a proper PC version of Deus Ex 3 and then figure out how to make it for consoles, just so that the game wont suffer the same exact fate as Deus Ex2 did.

Deus Ex2 was an ok game but nothing special compeared to the first one, mostly because it was made on consoles terms, small levels wich was the first notable thing in DX2. Besides that everything good about DX1 was dumbed down in DX2 so it'd work with console. Maybe a good example of this would be that.. sniper rifle had absolutely no use in any of DX2's levels them being so small for such weapon to do anything other than gathering dust in the corner.

I'm afraid DX3 will suffer the same fate as the previous game if it'll be made yet again on consoles terms, we'd be plagued with small levels yet again, constant loading screens, annoying inventories etc.
  • Drpwnage #43 4 years ago

I have to agree the consoles will be looking old tech when this game is eventually released. A PC version first then stripped down for the consoles second.

My expectations were set by reviews of IW and although it didn't reach the heights of DX it was pretty good.
  • Scimarad #44 4 years ago

People are going to bitch about this no matter how good it turns out...
  • fightman2 #45 4 years ago

who gives a fuck - this game wont appear for a couple years and by then it will no doubt be crap anyway.

fuck these idiots and let them shut up until the game comes up. fuck off and eat your own shit eidos - leave out the hype unless you want me to cut you with a blade
  • bionutz #46 4 years ago

well, I can't wait! again, DE2 was good, but quite annoying that it was a console version coerced to PC. I hope they learned that usability on PC means a different thing than on consoles. That was a betrayal to the fan base. I am actually curious if they sold much more games to consoles than to PC, anybody has some stats?

I don't really mind that much about the looks, it's purely because of the interface that I want this made primarily for PC. Deus Ex was great to play then, and still is now, but let's face it, other than the fact it had really big levels for its day, it always *looked* fairly ass even when it was new. Make it acceptably pretty, but concentrate first on complex and customiseable gameplay, rather than a rigid story and pretty graphics - that was what I reckon was Bioshock's biggest flaw.
  • jachap #48 4 years ago

It certainly was nice to hear that music again.

Trouble is, the more futuristic Deus Ex gets, the less interested I am. I loved the whole close-to-now/basically the 90s feel of the first one with the crappy bots and the crappy mutant beasts and the Not Too Sci-Fi... that's what I missed most.

In Two, you had all the bio-engineered ninja people and sexy holograms and loads of bloody gloss. It was, to me, the difference between the junk bucket Millennium Falcon and the sleek, shiny Naboo starfighters.

If they carry on down that trend, three's basically going to be in space and the boss is going to be a super intelligent version of one of those bloody lizard mutant things, breathing fire and quoting Voltaire.

Deus Ex is NOT a great franchise.

It is one great game with an awful sequel.

A new studio, unproven team, no links with the original team, and the current emphasis on producing console titles first and porting them to PC - no thanks
  • MrObycyek #52 4 years ago

Deus Ex for me is an absolute masterpiece of a game and is one of the few games I have played repeatedly. The sequel in my opinion was a total letdown. The problem was the developers had promised the world and actually ended up delivering a game that was inferior to the original. They said the powers would be even more impressive like being able to jump buildings in a single bound etc but this all turned out to be lies and the powers were all worse than in the original. Invisbile War was a decent game in it's own right but it is not on the same planet as the original and I worry that the third one may go down the same road. Take your best shot flatlander woman!
