Details of GTA IV PC patch emerge

Rockstar working to resolve problems.

Grand Theft Auto IV publisher Rockstar has confirmed it is working on a patch to resolve problems with the PC version of the game.

"[We] understand that several of you are experiencing difficulties with Grand Theft Auto IV PC, and we are committed to doing everything we can to help resolve these troubles," reads a post on the GTA forums.

That includes releasing a new driver to improve performance with 7900 series Nvidia cards, and another one from ATI.

In addition, a patch is on the way. It will include improvements to the video editor, memory savings, graphic improvements and support for DirectInput controllers - check out the forum post for the full rundown.

Rockstar is also working to fix problems with power management software and errors with the Social Club.

A release date for the patch has yet to be announced, as it must first receive certification from Microsoft,. However, Rockstar stated, "The patch is already at Microsoft and we expect a speedy approval."

This is the patch that has been at MS since before the game was actually released. Annoying - I don't like how MS are trying to make Games for Windows a "platform" with console antics like patch certification. Wish they'd keep their meddling fingers out of this - how little their certification process actually does was perfectly illustrated by the game itself.

Doesn't really mention performance improvements aprt from the memory savings, so I guess they are not forthcoming.

This is the only game I've tried that my PC simply cannot run at an acceptable framerate, even at the lowest detail settings.

edit: yes, and the idea of Microsoft having to approve an unrelated developer's patch is just madness. So many disappointments in so many areas for this game :(

Now I can only pray that Saints Row 2 might be an acceptable alternative...

This game is extremely CPU-bound - first one I've seen that gives a clear advantage to slower quad core processors over faster dual cores. GPU memory also helps. Actual GPU clock-speed doesn't seem to make much difference.

Really? Well, that would confirm the massive delays by MS "certification" for the billionth time. This isn't practical anymore.

Yes, that seems to be the case, even more so than SupCom. At least when a game is GPU limited you can turn dow the settings, but there seems to be no way to take the stress off the processor (apart from traffic density perhaps, but empty streets for an extra 1-2 fps seems like a pointless trade-off).

Well I have an Intel Quad core (cant remember speed off top of my head an im at work) and thisgame runs like shite through treacle. Like another poster said, I can run every other game perfectly fine but this game with everything reduced as lowas possible and a mediocre resolution just runs terrible. Barely playable. Driving around is about 7fps at a guess, so god knows what firefights will be like.

Very shoddy port of the highest order.

Comes to something when Crysis is playable on decent settings, and every other game (with the exception of Bully... hmmmm another R* game) but this is just shockingly bad.

I can't even install it, keep getting crc error's about 60 % into the first dvd. Installed games for window's and rock games to keep me entertained till i find a way to solve it. No wonder PC gaming is in the state it's in.

@LFace: what graphics card have you got? It seems to really struggle on anything with less than 512MB of memory. I'm running it on a dual core system (intel E8400) with a 512MB 8800GT and Windows Vista x64 and it actually runs pretty well.

Stephen - card isnt anything major and I know its holding the comp back, but as stated it runs all other games fine. Its a measly 8600gs..
