Destruction Derby for PS3 Store News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

15 February, 2007

Sony has another pair of downloadables hoping to drive interest in the PS3 Store today, with a demo of Full Auto 2: Battlelines and a downloadable version of PSone title Destruction Derby due to appear. Wasn't it clever how we used the word "drive"? We're real pros.

Neither's actually shown up on the Store at the time of writing, sadly, but we're obviously more interested in the latter. Destruction Derby, Psygnosis and Reflections' PSone title, was the original car masher for the format, and the ability to grab it for US$ 5.99, download it to our PSP Memory Sticks and port it around is quite welcome.

Full Auto 2, while we've yet to review it, hasn't been smashing US records quite as much as developer Pseudo Interactive probably hoped, but still sounds like a solid improvement on its moderately enjoyable Xbox 360-exclusive predecessor. Interested parties will also be happy to learn that it forms part of the PS3's 23rd March European launch line-up - a mountain of software that Sony insists ought to be available on day one.

The very first Destruction Derby had a quality driving engine. The stuff you could pull off in the derby bowls was excellent.

Your right that they are yet to really up load any PSone classics...i mean Tekken 2 is good but why not just download Tekken 5??

The first Destuction Derby was pathetic. All the cars are nailed to the ground, and the courses are all narrow and bland. At £5.99 that's a colossal waste of money.

I imagine DrDamn is talking about Destruction Derby 2 as you could do sod all in the first game's derby bowls.

Agreed, DD2 was far better because it added vertical crashes and jumps to proceedings and was far more fun as a result. There was only one bowl in the first game and it was a plain blow with no variation in height or width. DD2 on the other hand has a few different bowl arenas. It also had far better race courses - that were much more complex, varied and challenging and a better car damage system to boot. Of course the original Destruction Derby will always have a place in my heart as it was the game I purchased along with my PS1.

Defo talking about the first DD. The race stuff was a bit pooey. In bowls you could wang the car around balletically. It just felt so natural and connected pulling off bootleggers and power slides. I fully accept I may have some serious rose tinted spec of though :0).

What we also need is UK releases of stuff like Final Fantasy Tactics and Chrono Cross.

I loved the first DD, especially playing in the derby bowls, and getting that huge "360!" swirling around the screen whenever pulling this move against a rival. I guess I might be a little biased as I'm remembering with my spectacles ON.

Why £5.99? Sony could steal a march on the opposition here, just by being a bit more forward-thinking. They've got a vast array of enjoyable titles on tap (pending emulation or whatever) - they should punt them out at a pricepoint that doesn't require any pre-purchase thought, and no post-purchase dissatisfaction if the rose-tinted specs get wrenched away by reality..

15 titles downloaded @£2.99 > 5 titles downloaded at £5.99

Erm, it's $5.99. Obviously in magic games currency conversion land that will be more like £4, but it's still closer to your wanted purchase price. Unless Sony Europe have annouced prices for this stuff already?

Ironically, people all over the world are already playing the best PSOne classics on their PSPs, for free (well, they already paid for the CDs before) and SUPER ILLEGALLY*.

If the ps3 is backwards compatible, then why dowload ps1 titles?

Are they free?

"Are they free?"

The clue to this is kind of in the text and discussion. Download 'em because you can't find them else where, they should run more smoothly off the HD and they are always there and available rather than having to find the disc etc.

The first DD was easily the best. The later ones had wider tracks, etc, that appealed to people who didn't 'get' the original. Even the races were never about racing, and the small, narrow tracks meant plenty more chance of a decent pile up. Remember, winning was about points, not going anywhere fast, or in the right direction for that matter.

Despite having a PS3, PSP and the desire to play Destruction Derby again, I won't be downloading/buying this. I want to actually play them on the PS3, and not being able to is absolutely mental.

I loved the first one, the only destruction game where the whole point was to get through it while hitting AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE. Going over the crossovers was really scary. the driving model was so simple it worked really well, i didn't like the later version withs the flying, as it became a lot more random. If you vcrashed in DD1, you knew why, and next time you were more careful...

i also loved the way you could pick on the drivers in your league because of their coloured roof, great idea taken from real banger racing.

Did I miss something? Are PS1 downloadable titles now playable on the PS3?

As far as I've read so far, they work on PSP, but not yet (stupidly) on the PS3.

If this recently changed, then by all means let me know people, as I still wont buy a P$£ for £425 plus £50-£60 for games!

Sony continues to shoot itself in the foot. Where's my PSP iTunes where I can securely and simply download and transfer these PS1 games, as well as TV, movie and music content? Silly dinosaurs.
