PSN update: demos, DLC, more demos

inFamous! Marvel vs. Capcom! Red Gorillas!

There are demos aplenty on the PS3 Store this weekend, including tasters for inFamous, Red Faction: Guerrilla, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

There's plenty more content for existing PS3 games as well. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena gets a map pack as does F.E.A.R. 2. There are some monster-themed costumes and level-making tools for LittleBigPlanet, plus some special Live recordings by Alice Cooper for Rock Band. Alice, remember, is a man. It's so confusing.

Also, note the excellent puzzler Fading Shadows for download on PSP. This costs 12 quid but is well worth the money. Pop over to our Fading Shadows review to find out more.

Having done extensive research on fading shadows I must say I am slightly wary of your review EG! Much like your review for the very average and MEH Mercury Meltdown.

Let me see if I understand this correctly.

Riddick Dark Athena: Premium Multiplayer Map Pack

PSN £7.99
380 800MS (£6.67)

F.E.A.R. 2: Armored Front Map Pack

PSN £3.99
360 400MS (3.33)

Guitar Hero World Tour: European Track Pack 05

PSN £4.39
360 440MS (£3.66)

This is how it should be

Tom Clancy's HAWX: Russian Falcons Pack

PSN £3.49
460 440MS (£3.33)

Or even better

Rock Band: Alice Cooper Pack 01

PSN £5.99
360 800MS (£6.67)

It's becoming far too common that PSN prices here in the UK are matched with how many MS points the are selling for and it's just an easy way to scam extra cash out of the end user.

WHERE ARE THE NEW SINGSTAR SONGS?
• jonsaan #4 3 years ago

Factor in the credit card interest 'some' people incur when dealing with LIVE and I would go for PSN every time rotmm.
• rotmm #5 3 years ago

What credit card interest?
• jonsaan #6 3 years ago

Well...if you pay for your points using a credit card. Which is the only option other than prepaid code cards, then unless you are extremely organised, which I'm sure you are (I'm not), you'll be paying interest on your credit card balance.
• Mattb90 #7 3 years ago

What are you on about? Payment is only via a debit or credit card on PSN (in Europe), while Xbox Live lets you use a debit or credit card, as well as points cards. So surely if that's how you're weighing things up, XBL comes out on top? I just use a debit card on both, so don't have to worry about any interest payments, but that's surely your own problem anyway?
• jonsaan #8 3 years ago

LIVE does not accept my debit card. Hence my issue. I am hardly going to change bank accounts just for that. But yes, as I made fairly clear I am sure you all organise your finances and have no issues with credit. oh to be so perfect.

PSN accepts my debit card, that was my point.

Actually, this update is pretty awesome. But there's always something to complain about I guess.
• ryohazuki1983 #10 3 years ago

Played the multiplayer Red Faction demo last night on 360, loving the game :) Was gonna buy after playing the offline demo and want it even more now after playing online for a few hours with the demo.
• rotmm #11 3 years ago

@menage,

I know, I know. Complaining about being overcharged for content is such a lame thing to do. Please accept my apologies and in future, I'll follow your lead and continue to be content with being shafted.
• menage #12 3 years ago

@rotmm

deduct the 60 bucks a year for live for that and you're probably of cheaper anyway.
• shotgun44 #13 3 years ago

• Olemak #14 3 years ago

Played through the InFamous demo, quite meaty! But in French, which I dont really understand all that well! Still a lot of fun, will be getting it.
• rotmm #15 3 years ago

@menage,

Since when is Live "60 bucks a year"? Also, since when is Live necessary for purchasing content on the 360?

Also, if you're going to go down the "price comparison" route, you could talk about how you'll get 3 years of live for the price difference between a PS3 and 360 Pro, plus you get the benefit of being charged more for online content on the PS3.

Sigh

My post was just to complain about certain publishers ripping off PS3 owners by charging (sometimes) significantly more for exactly the same product. If you're happy with that, then fine. But it doesn't sit quite so well with me.
• menage #16 3 years ago

Fair enough, just saying not every system and store is the same. Hell, I could buy a bread at one supermarket for probably 10 cents less than the other one.

Oh, and 60 bucks in Dutch money:p sorry about that.
• Miths #17 3 years ago

I was rather surprised by how long the inFamous demo was - I was sure it would end right after that first train mission. Not that I really needed a long (and great) demo to be convinced that this is a release day purchase for me :).
• fjharps #18 3 years ago

Good game infamous although it's not great either have to wait for the complete thing though and I don't know why it reminds me of Spider-man 2 on the PS2 though
• shotgun44 #19 3 years ago

Liking infamous. Always looked forward to prototype but it seems to have lost its scope since first announced a few years ago!
• cherryuk #20 3 years ago

The Marvel vs Capcom 2 is shite - stick to the PS2 version it doesn't quite work on the HD TV
• septimus #21 3 years ago

Like inFamous. Maybe not as graphically impressive as Prototype, but I think it will have greater longevity.

@ rotmm

As i understand it, Sony charges publishers per GB of data downloaded from PSN, whereas MS do not, which is probably the reason prices are usually higher. Blame Sony, not the pubs.

Debit cards, Jonsaan.

Prepaid cards, Jonsaan.

Prepaid Visas, Jonsaan.

edit: BTW - I've had the M Vs C demo for weeks, but can't play it without a second controller!

Maestro cards sadly not though. I do realise It's not the end of the world. Just a giant pain in the ass for me. It has not prevented me spending way too much money on LIVE as it is, so MS still love me.

Sony love me too as I've spent even more on PSN.

That MvsC2 demo pissed me off with it's 2 player bs. I deleted it immediately as I'm running out of room on my PS3's HDD and there isn't a bigger HDD available to buy :(

***edit***

PSP2 will be shown at E3.

@chessboxer

"I'm running out of room on my PS3's HDD and there isn't a bigger HDD available to buy"

I am curious - what size HDD do you have on your PS3 that you are running out of room? I have a 500 GB Seagate Momentus 7200.4 HDD. Did you manage to fill up an HDD of that size? If not, then just letting you know that there are 2.5 inch 500 GB internal HDDs available now in the market if you are interested.
• chessboxer #27 3 years ago

I have a Samsung M6 500GB HDD (had it since August/September 2008) and yes it's nearly full (just over 3GB free). I have many games, and lots of media on it. I'm hoping for a 1Tb or 1.5TB HDD to come out soon.
• AOFanboi #28 3 years ago

I'm hoping for a 1Tb or 1.5TB HDD to come out soon.

2.5" HDDs will trail 3.5" for a long time still I'm afraid... maybe PS4 will use 3.5" drives? :)
• Ryze #29 3 years ago

I'd advise a NAS box, external HDD or an old PC for your video collection.

Just keep the stuff you watch regularly on the internal drive.

Otherwise, make sure that you're using low bitrate video such as H.264 AVC, DivX or VC-1/Windows Media Video 9. If you're using MPEG-1/2, then I wouldn't be surprised it's full.
• chessboxer #30 3 years ago

External drives are out of the question as my PS3 is for HD video content (when I'm not gaming), mostly 1080p ranging from 6GB to 12GB each. I only put media on there that I want to keep and there's lots that will not make it onto my PS3 until a larger HDD is available.

I guess my media will just have to take a back seat to my gaming HDD space requirements for the time being...

"then unless you are extremely organised, which I'm sure you are (I'm not), you'll be paying interest on your credit card balance."

Just use your credit card as a debit card (by having the issuer automatically cash in the balance after every period). Works like a charm, even if you're not extremely organised.. :)
