DDO Update 5 dated, brings airships

Also guild levelling and circus adventure.

Turbine has revealed details of Update 5 to its resurgent MMO, Dungeons & Dragons Online.

Released on 28th June, according to Massively, DDO Update 5 is called Rise of the Guilds. It will allow guilds to level up and earn Renown and Trophies as they grow in numbers and progress through the game's content.

Ultimately, you'll be able to buy a flying airship HQ for your guild and customise it with decorations and amenities.

Also launching with Update 5 is the Carnival of Shadow adventure pack, which brings four new dungeon adventures in a "circus of depravity and danger". Plus there will be two new classes of Hireling, and various new character class spells and features.

DDO has been going from strength to strength since its relaunch as a free-to-play game last year, with a recent survey ranking it as the third biggest MMO in the US. You can either subscribe to all content in the traditional manner, or buy features and content piecemeal from Turbine's store.

"Ultimately, you'll be able to by a flying airship HQ" - maybe even buy one, too?

Is DDO available here on the same free-to-play, pay-for-content scheme as it is in the states? I thought the EU version was still subscription-based.

the EU version is but there's nothing to stop you downloading from Turbine and playing on the US servers. Worked for me and it's a decent game - just wasn't quite my cup of tea.

Ah, thought as much. Yeah, I played it back when it first came out, and enjoyed it for a while- but didn't think it did enough (back then, at least) to warrant a subscription fee. Might give it another try now though.

DDO is great although as others have mentioned, seemed like it didn't offer as much as the other MMO's on the market. That said, I was playing DDO over 18 months ago and so it sounds like they are really pulling out all the stops. Will certainly try download and playing on the US servers. D&D in general just rocks btw!!!

Cool, I want to add a onboard toilet that releases poop down below.

    +13 Splash Damage.

IIRC the lawsuit filed by Turbine against Atari interfered with any change to the EU subscription model. That lawsuit has been settled out of court but there's been no news of any change in the status of DDO in Europe (Hasbro are still suing Atari, so that might complicate matters)

Are there seriously people in europe still paying for this as a sub based game?
When the yanks get it free-to-play?
    lovely!
    - though its less horrible if the Europeans can register on the US servers...

Europeans can play on the US servers without problem. I've spent $100 on it myself, buying all the adventure packs, some races, etc. Cheaper than a life-time sub, and playing through the adventure packs earn you free points to buy more stuff with.

Subscribing is still decent value if you play in short intensive bursts, as you get access to everything and earn some extra points to unlock stuff in the store with.

DDO is in my opinion, as a tabletop gamer, the best video game adaptation of the franchise. Better balanced than D&D 3.5 for sure.
