DC Universe Online Hands On

MMO PC PlayStation 3 Hands On by Ellie Gibson

6 August, 2008

Page 1 of 3. Page 2 ->

With great power comes great responsibility, as a certain superhero once learned. The same can be said of a great licence. There's always a chance you'll bungle it, produce something that appeals to neither fans of the IP nor the gaming genre, and spend the next five years apologising for your mistakes.

Sony Online Entertainment learned that lesson with Star Wars Galaxies, but that hasn't stopped the publisher taking on another high profile licence and turning it into an MMO. And this time, there are arguably even greater risks attached. To begin with, DC Universe Online is in development for PlayStation 3 as well as PC. So there's the issue of how you make an MMO work on a console, and of designing a control system that works for both platforms. You have to strike the right balance between tactical gameplay and fast-paced action. And you have to answer the question of whether console gamers even want to play MMOs in the first place.

There are also particular problems with the DC licence. Giving players the ability to wield a big sword made of light and chuck things about telekinetically is one thing; what happens when they also expect to leap buildings in a single bound, encase enemies in blocks of ice, shoot lasers from their eyes and do everything else the 4000-odd characters in DC's portfolio are capable of? What do you do when everyone wants to "be" Batman? And how do you balance the combat when everyone playing the game has the option to shoot lasers from their eyes?

Like some kind of MMO Publisher of Steel, SOE is hands-on-hips unafraid in the face of such questions. To start us off, creative director Chris Cao tackles the issue of why MMOs haven't yet made it big on consoles. "People haven't been able to deliver the calibre of game console gamers expect," he says. "We have. We've built a team out of MMO makers and action game makers. We've made an action game moment-to-moment, and an MMO game month-to-month.

"All the things we like about MMOs - levels, loot, long-term stories - those will be there," Cao promises. "But now, for the first time, console players will have a game they actually enjoy playing, rather than one that's meant and better suited for the PC."

I'm approaching DC Universe Online as one of those console players SOE is trying to attract. I dabbled with WOW, getting to level 23 before realising I was bored and it was March, and haven't touched an MMO since. So given the choice of starting with the PS3 or PC version, I pick up the Sixaxis instinctively. And instinctively, the first thing I try out is the flying.

'DC Universe Online' Screenshot 1

"I never knew you liked Pina Coladas. Do you also like making love at midnight?"

Cao explains the mechanics - click L3 to get your character airborne, then use the left stick to control it on the horizontal axis. Pressing X gives you a speed boost, but this means sacrificing a little control; it's best used for getting from A to B fast rather than manoeuvring during combat.

This is all straightforward enough, but things get trickier when it comes to adjusting your altitude. Pushing the right stick up makes your character ascend, and you push down to descend. However, the right stick also controls the camera, as it does when you're on the ground. So whenever you rise through the air you're forced to look upwards, and vice versa. Surely this could cause problems if you're attempting to soar away from danger down below, or if you're being pursued by another character who's able to fly? The constant flicking between viewpoints is disorienting and awkward, and it turns out I'm rubbish at flying. Just like in real life.

"It's because we have full 3D flight," says Cao. "It's a little tricky. But we've noticed it's good to have player skill in some elements because after a little bit of time you gain mastery over it, and you're able to do manoeuvres a lower level player couldn't. So player skill does matter quite a bit." Shame I don't have any, then. "And of course we're pre-alpha, so we have some refinements to do to make it a little easier."

The flying sounds like potential catatrophe... it says the camera is controlled by the right stick, so if you have inverse look on, will you look down as you fly upwards? I would rather fly in the direction that the character is looking in, or perhaps have a Warhawk-esque hovver on/fly on mode switch.

Mmmm, not so good then?

The biggest problem is that most players will want to be the iconic superhero and not some generic wannabe and not sure if console owners used the quick thrill of console games will be willing to put in the hours to level up the characters

I'm glad though, I don't care if everyone wants to be Batman. I was reading up about Star Wars online and how it was alright until they decided to patch it so it was easy for everyone to be Jedi.

Except I won't, because Superman will probably just ask me to go and kill ten super-powered rat-people, just like every other fucking MMO.

I never want to play as Superman or Spiderman, i want to be 'The Funky Monk' or 'Biscuitman'... much more fun.

Hell, i was Paul Daniels in CoH, teleporting up to random PCs saying 'That's Magic!' and teleporting away again.

me = easily pleased.

I don't think there's so much fun to be found in being the established superhero. You already know because of comic-book convention, or familiarity with the character, the sort of things you'll be facing. But if you build your own character from scratch, you get to guide the development, create your own saga.

Warhawk's flying mechanism is pretty much perfect. I hope they adopt the same for this because from the DCU preview the flying sounded crap and likely to alienate a lot of potential players.

johnnybrn, as Edge explained in this month's magazine, the game's about building your own legends, so if you want to 'be' the heroes then there are plenty of other games to satisfy that need.

Additionally, your question regarding the appropriateness of the game for console gamers could also be leveled at Halo Wars. In short, your "not good then" remark jumping the gun.

Oh, and other than Batman, DC isn' comparable to Marvel... :p

MS 'F'ed up big cancelling that project.

That won't change anything, DC would still have super-ponce and a bunch of other lame arse characters.

And Grant Morrison isn't shit, just insane. He needs to be kept in check or he goes mental (see: The Invisibles), but in short bursts he can be amazing (see: Animal Man).

On one condition; There's no monthly fee...Which is doubtful; So chances are I won't be getting this.
But I do want it.

@Pearl of anguish

The characters aren't the problem. The stories are. It is more than possible to make good stories involving Superman. As a matter of fact, I actually prefer DC's superheroes, but nothing DC has produced in the last 3-4 years comes close to Ironman, Thor, any of the Avengers books, Ms Marvel, even Spiderman (now that I am getting used to 'Brand new day', Iron Fist, Secret Invasion and a few others.

Captain America is shit, though. So is Daredevil.

See, this is why developers should keep things behind closed doors until they're nearer to release. Like in the good old days, before the internet and...um...electricity and stuff.

Slagging the demo off for not giving you a big enough playing area, when the developers have been good enough to actually produce a demo for Comic Con, seems to be missing the point entirely. This was in no way representative of the finished article, and just serves as a teaser more than anything. A three page preview on a pre alpha demo at a comics exhibition seems somewhat over the top.

Champions Online == City of Heroes 2. Unless you get to build powers using the Hero/Champions system. RKA FTW!

DC Online sounds more interesting. As for Marvel... well, pester Microsoft to restart the project, then. At the moment Marvel Online is dead. And not in the "Death of Superman" sense either.

There should only be one Superman, one Batman etc. But they shouldn't be glorified NPCs. They need to feel like real life characters - get the devs to take control of them, give them an agenda and a 'life' that the player might/can be able to interact with.

I don't get why one stick doesn't do flight steering in X and Y and the other does looking with a button for "go" and X for "go more". Or is that too basically sensible? When are you not going to want to either hover or be going as fast as possible?
