Dark Sector PS3 "Entitlements" explained News

PlayStation 3 Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

6 March, 2008

D3Publisher has told Eurogamer that the PS3 "Entitlement" system in Dark Sector is a one off.

It was responding to a rather premature announcement of the Xbox 360 Achievements for the game, which were listed alongside identical PS3 rewards called "Entitlements".

Developer Digital Extremes had been working on this from the outset as a way to reward you for your hard work, according to a spokesperson for the publisher, but it is a system restricted to Dark Sector and not one you will see in other PS3 titles.

Dark Sector is due out in April with a demo likely to appear around that time.

The Achievements / Entitlements can be found below. They total 700, which is bizarre.

Jeez, you might have put the spoiler tags on.

Anything out near GTA IV, is, sadly, for me, not going to happen until winter, most likely. Remember being interested in this a while ago when they 'changed the style' or whatever.

The term Entitlement is such a blatant 360 rip off and doesn't even make sense.

I would have preferred a term that sounded less like a weak imitation.
e.g. Accolade

This is something Sony need to fix. Clearly gamers want to have some recognition for their achievements within a game. At the moment there is no consistent way for them to have that if they play a PS3 game. The main sticker is that the medals, accolades or achievements are not visible to your friends (which let's face it is why we collect them in the first place).

Most of us secretly want to have those "Your a bit crap aren't you mate" moments. The monets where we say "Hey you're struggling on kill em all X aren't you...of course I've finished that so I can help you...I even got the secret kill more than that achievement".

Yes I'm sad like that. At the old get togethers I like to boast a bit about my gaming skills. The achievements are the equivalent of the photo evidence if you will ;)

"The term Entitlement is such a blatant 360 rip off and doesn't even make sense"

Can I balance a big fat SO WHAT on top the pile. Seriously, who bloody cares if its a copy of 360 achievements, and even more seriously who cares what they call the things. Is it fun? If so, mission accomplished.

"This is something Sony need to fix. Clearly gamers want to have some recognition for their achievements within a game."

They have trophies on the cards, as shown in some Home related movies somewhere or other. Those are in the same ballpark I believe.

On the subject of achievements, I have changed my stance on them recently. It used to be the case that I didn't care a tinker's fart about the points, but I quite liked the achievements. But recently I've been going off achievements too.

They seem to keep popping up and messing with my own ideas about how I performed in a game. I play a game, I have a good time, I did the stuff I wanted to do. Then a browse through the achievement list shows I in fact, contrary to previous belief, suck in several ways I hadn't even imagined. I then troop back through sections of the game, laboriously repeating things, not because its fun but because I feel like I should.

Well I've had an epiphany. I don't bother with them anymore. Achievements I earn through normal play may bring a smile to my face, but I don't go seeking out the ones that I didn't get already doing things my way. And I still don't care about the points, so everyone is happy.

As a plan, its not for everyone. But it works for me :)

Edit: I will say actually, on the note made by penhalion, comparing achievements with friends is still fun. Its just when I feel like I am setting myself goals that aren't much fun to pursue that I get all grumpy.

Strange cos among my friends none of us give a shit about our 360 Gamer Score, in fact people that have a massive gamer score are slightly looked down on for not having much life out side of the 360.

As most of us have realised its not really a Number that shows your skil, itsl more of a number that shows Quantity of games youve played through.

For example if you had 2 mates and 1 had slept with 10 Sexy models and the other had slept with 50 Fat Momas who would you be more impressed with?

I'm sick of people ripping off Microsoft's ideas. Have you seen that iPod thing? Total rip-off of the Zune. They ought to sue.

Is it likely that those trophies still feature captured footage in the Trophy Room of the moment of brilliance where you beat the target? I think they will reduce those clips to one per game, or something - else space would be taken up too quickly!

I think a better name for Achievements (and the like) would be Challenges.

Achievements, Entitlements, Accomplishments...they all have a 'Ooh, look at me and what I did and how great I am' vibe. The Challenges moniker suggests that the fun is in the doing, not in keeping score and bragging afterwards. It also sounds more like they exist outside the core gaming experience as optional extras, which is as it should be.

I find saying 'Hey, I got this achievement' a touch smug; embarrassing, even. Saying 'Hey, I completed that challenge' would be much better, as it doesn't suggest that I'm attaching value something that at the end of the day is pretty much worthless in real terms. I'd much rather talk about how much fun I had with a game than how many boxes I ticked along the way.

Having said that, I do actually like how Achievements give you more stuff to do if you want to. I just think they've been horribly branded.

The big diference between both systems is, IMO, the PS3 ones aren't PSN globaly integrated.

"Achievements, Entitlements, Accomplishments...they all have a 'Ooh, look at me and what I did and how great I am' vibe."
Why ?, I mean, what's the deal with this assumption that we know what's supposed to be fun to OTHERS ? I don't want to impose my idea of fun to anyone. For instance, I like to do the Achievemtents (for reasons like, value for money - there's no renting where I live; exploring the whole game), but it's not an hierarchical thing. Sometimes a Live friend says "oooh so many Achivements! How do you do that?", and the answer is obvious: "just play the game..., if you want", it has nothing to do with beeing more or less than any other fellow video-gamer. I don't think I'm better than anyone, the same way I find it offensive if someone claims I have no life or such. It's a personal thing, and people should mind their own fun.

I'm always surprised no one mentions Devil May Cry 4, which has "Accomplishments". These aren't just in-game thing, when you get one it comes up as a system message, like an Achievement. You can also compare your Accomplishments online to anyone on your friends list.

But I hope no PS3 games get them. I started to despise the system - it made me lose sight of just enjoying games, as I'd always seek out those flippin' points. The one good thing that came out of it is I no longer always play games on Easy, but I don't want to worry about playing the way the developer wanted, I want to do it my way. It's not like I'm a fanboy kidding myself I don't want them to spite Microsoft in case we don't get them - I had a 360 for a year, loved them at first, then grew more and more hateful towards them to the point gaming was a grind, not a pleasure.

whats wrong with something that gives the game more playtime.. even if some of the achievements, entitlements, trophies whatever theyre called are monotonous tasks that take forever.... many people love mmo's and theyre just one big grind.. they give people other options other than just completing a game, the achievements in crackdown and dead rising for instance give you some tasks you might not have not bothered with. and i got hours of fun trying to complete them, its nice to have that option its not like it ruins the game or anything. ratchet and clank have had them forever (and spyro i hear also) and they made otherwise 15 hour experiences into much much longer ones... whats to fault there?. the ps3 NEEDS more games with this OPTION its not like it would be that much effort to do (possibly for ubisoft.. you OWE ME 90 POINTS!).. i enjoyed going for the ones in uncharted, ratchet and some of the ones in resistance ...

and tmnt isnt a BAD game...its fine for what it was better than most movie tie ins...and yeah i do have the 1000 from it
