CSI: Crime Scene Investigation 2 Reader Review
I enjoyed the first CSI game, even though it wasn't very long, as you had to think to solve the puzzles. It fitted in well with the TV shows and let you try your hand at being a CSI. I spotted CSI Dark Motives in the bargain bin, remembered enjoying CSI, and bought it. That was where the enjoyment ended.
CSI: Dark Motives is just too full of bugs to be worth your time playing. I have had to replay the first mission 7 times to trick it into giving me the crucial bits of evidence that I have collected, but the game hasn't recognised.
At long last I reached the second mission, only to find that the game has replaced all my questions and case notes with French, despite installing in English, but the speech and subtitles remain in English. Little surprise to find that again, halfway through the investigation the game fails to recognise crucial pieces of collected evidence and needs me to restart the case. Again.
The single patch released by Ubisoft is already on retail versions, and doesn't fix the problems. A quick Google of "CSI Dark Motives" and "problems" finds other people experiencing the same thing.
Perhaps the most surprising feature of this sequel is that the graphics for the main CSI characters are worse, and less realistic than the first CSI game. How this happened I don't know, and by now I'm beyond caring. This is a classic example of a game rushed out to cash in on a franchise - speed is of the essence and quality ignored.
When I play a bad game I usually grumble about it, but that's it. This game has reached a whole new level, and needs a warning across the box.
