Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates dated News

DS News by Robert Purchese

17 January, 2008

Square Enix will be releasing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates on 21st March.

It's one of the two titles spun from the GameCube original, the other being Crystal Bearers on Wii.

However, Ring of Fates is considered a more direct sequel and focuses on action and four-player local co-operative mischief - handled a little more skilfully by each of you having your own DS screen to focus on.

Twins and their love for each other are at the heart of the story this time, and what a good choice that is. Absolutely no bias here. Twins are fantastic.

You see, Chelinka and Yuri have a shared magical power, and they will need to be near each other to use it and purge the land of the evils of the blood red moon.

But little else is surprising; chirpy 3D visuals, lots of costumes to dress up in, no random battles and an intuitive control system blah blah stylus.

Prompted Japanese magazine Famitsu to score it 35/40, if you go by its reviews, and us Europeans are getting four more exclusive quests to wallow in.

One to watch, literally, if you head over to Eurogamer TV for the newest trailer.

Not really, FFCC was always about being in the same room with the other players

Yes and I did that with 1 TV, 1 GC and 4 GBAs, but it's a pain to organise. The GBA didn't have Internet capability but the DS does - therefore the disappointment.

Seriously though, I don't know why it would be a pain to organise a simple gettogether with friends. We all have jobs, but if it's become an obstacle between you and your friends&family, personally I would take a look at making some changes in my life.

Oh give me a break. I don't see why they couldn't implement Internet play as an option to make it easier for people to play together.

4 GBAs, 4 link cables, a TV and a Gamecube = a 'simple' get-together? What on earth would you call 'complicated' then?

I'm not even talking about whether or not anyone would like internet play. I'm talking about this kind of thing:

4 GBAs, 4 link cables, a TV and a Gamecube = a 'simple' get-together? What on earth would you call 'complicated' then?

Haha oh god man, are you serious? I just linked to that comic. You sound just like that guy. "OH I NEED A GAMECUBE AND A TV TO PLAY A GAMECUBE GAME? FUCK THAT!" Just the fact that you even list something ridiculous like the console and TV needed makes you lose credibility.

And almost every serious gamer at the time had a GBA. Most of my friends had more than one, making up for the one person who didn't. As for link cables, you get one with the game, one friend already had one, and the other remaining two people just bought one for themselves since they're dirt cheap.

Let's face it, if you think something like this is "complicated" then I wonder how you even get by in life. FFCC was great, and this is all crybaby bullshit from people who have some sort of retarded grudge against the GC and find this game the perfect opportunity to have a good go at it. (disclaimer: may or may not apply to you the reader, etc.)

Temper, temper. Got a bit of a chip on your shoulder about this one, eh?

At the time of CC's release I had two GBA-owning mates, neither of whom owned a Gamecube. In those circumstances, a game which not only offered a unique and brilliantly crafted home-to-handheld control scheme but also came with bog-standard controller support would have been preferable.

But I forgot- I lack cwedibility. I'm not a sewwious gamer like what you is.

Well, just saying "it would've been nice" certainly stands in no comparison to the kind of unmerited shitstorms we've had about it in the past. Or shit-hurricanes, more like.

And yes, i r more serious gamers then you. :(

I agree the game was great and well worth the weekly get together I had with my friends to play it as it was meant to be played. To be honest though I don't think it was ever commercially viable to make games with such a high barrier to entry but it happened because of Nintendo's money and desire to cross-sell. To those who could enjoy it properly it will always be cherished but I can see why the masses grumbled. It would have better to not include a single player mode at all.

Yeah, singleplayer kinda sucked. Then again, so do most singleplayer modes in multiplayer based games.

However, painting the moogle was pretty much the greatest thing ever.

Tweakmonkey: while it was indeed not very commercially viable, personally I am thankful for the rare times when unique games do get made, despite that.
