Crysis 2 set in New York City

Bust urban fools with Nanosuit 2.0.

Crytek's forthcoming multiformat sequel to Crysis is reportedly set in New York City, according to the latest US issue of Official PlayStation Magazine.

The mag's editor tweeted the front cover, which talks up the new city setting, under attack by aliens.

EA recently told investors that Crysis 2 would be released before the end of March 2011, and a recent US PC Gamer preview listed the game for "Dec 2010".

You can check out a video of the new Nanosuit on Eurogamer TV, or pop over to our Digital Foundry channel for an exploration of the technical possibilities on console.

EA and Crytek announced last year that the game would be released for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

I'm guessing the move to an urban environment may have something to do with catering for the consoles.

The 360 will be my platform of choice for this, but it's quite obvious that it wouldn't be able to cope with the high quantity of interactive foliage that we saw in Crysis.

Yeah saw this today. From the sounds of it they've taken out the two best things about Crysis, the location and the koreans. Stuck in an urban location and upped the awful aliens with an attack :(

Please be good! Please be good!

Well, console or not I can understand the move away from jungle setting. But urban NYC? It better have some neat mechanic to back it up like shooting while Mirror's Edging or something
  • Eraysor #4 2 years ago

That's a shame. I mean, the most irritating thing about Crysis was the cliffhanger ending and now it seems we're in a completely different place for the sequel.

poor nyc. it's taken a lot of (fictional) damage
  • koopa #6 2 years ago

Non-jungle levels and alien levels were the weakest part of the first two games IMO, so I don't know how this will turn out. I know they can't use the same tropical setting forever, but there sure are prettier places in the world than NYC...

This is like setting Lost Planet on a beach. Seems crazy to me and I can't help but be a little disappointed, but it could still be a fantastic game if they carry on getting the things right that they got right before.
  • AphoticCosmos #8 2 years ago

So . . . the ending of the first game leads to . . . the urban jungle? How does that work? I presume it's not all in NYC, becauase last I checked the remnants of Raptor were still on the Island.

Still, frozen NYC could look awesome on the new engine - the demos I've seen have all been around city environments and they looked stunning.
  • Stuz359 #9 2 years ago

The best thing about Crysis was the setting. Now it's set in an Urban environment it's going to look just as dull as every other FPS.

Maybe they'll recreate the dense foliage of Central Park?

I do have Crysis, but never played it much because it runs like dead arse on my PC. But Crysis 2 on 360 - I can go for that.
  • mkreku #11 2 years ago

I wonder if this will be the new measuring stick on the PC? I mean, I am still loading up Crysis every time I upgrade my computer!
  • Deckard1 #12 2 years ago

Does anyone know if you can wear ugg boots in this game?
  • tancredo #13 2 years ago

As Bitesparc mentioned, they could use use Central Park as a location for "jungle" action.

Crysis could have a nice mix of urban and jungle levels if they went for it
  • PearOfAnguish #14 2 years ago

Sneaking about in stealth mode was fun fun fun, so I could go for some urban jungle nanosuit action. But not with aliens.
  • Retro_ #15 2 years ago

    New York?...... Aliens?.....Crysis 2 ?

Surely you're talking about Resistance 3!
  • bodypopper #16 2 years ago

Well the Cry Engine 3 tech demo gave us a clue that this would be the case. Farcry and Crysis pretty much did all they could with the jungle/island setting really.
  • abcd #17 2 years ago

I don't want to shoot aliens!!! I'm sick of shooting aliens.

I want to shoot Koreans or Nazis or rogue soldiers.

    Oh well
  • Snidesworth #18 2 years ago

Crytek games have been synonymous with steamy jungle action since their conception. Even when the Far Cry split away from the studio they retained the setting. We've seen NYC in games before. Many, many times before.

Will there be human enemies to fight? Warhead made fighting the aliens much more fun with improved AI and more enemy variation, but the Koreans were always the most fun.

always thought the control system with it's menu's lent itself to a console pad rather than a keyboard, but i never got a good enough PC to play the game on in anything except on slideshow mode :p

"I wonder if this will be the new measuring stick on the PC? I mean, I am still loading up Crysis every time I upgrade my computer! "

Oh poo, not tried it on my 5850.

I can't see this being the huge jumper that crysis was, but due to the nature of the consoles it should now run on my quad core nicely. Saying that as long as the PC version isn't held back for the consoles then that is great.
  • Boomerang #21 2 years ago

*sniff* ... you had me at "steamy jungle action"...

    /hugsie
  • FogHeart #22 2 years ago

Ah, Crytek, long may your screenshots fill us with a sense of awe and depressed inadequacy about our own rigs, like fatties in a gym when a buff bloke walks in.

To those wondering about the last game's ending: I haven't finished the game so I don't know the ending, but maybe the first level or two of the game will be set on the island and then somehow move to NYC?
  • chukcyQ #26 2 years ago

I've been to NYC also in real life. I want to go elsewhere. There are more cities than just NYC in USA...
  • UncleLou #27 2 years ago

    Hohum. :-/

Bit tired of palm trees these days, but a proper "northern" forest would have been nice. Armed Assault 2's forests are terrific.
  • Boomerang #28 2 years ago

We get it, they can do foliage. Woop-de-fucking-do.

I want to be able to flatten skyscrapers.
  • metalangel #29 2 years ago

Anyone else read that and just think "Prototype"?
  • Skurmedel #30 2 years ago

Mogs: Lol, still doesn't beat the betamax bandit :D
  • Wolverfrog #31 2 years ago

I'm looking forward to this game. Hopefully they'll also give us the first game in the Cryengine 3 too, so then we won't need to steal a super computer from MI5 to play it.
  • TheGuvernor #32 2 years ago

    Set it in Rio fffs!
Then I can sneak up on all the hot chicks with my super suit!!! Sweet!
  • metalangel #33 2 years ago

@TheGuvernor: After the favela levels in MW2, I never want to play another game set in Brazil ever again.
  • MrsPacMan #34 2 years ago

    @metalangel

Prototype? Have u played it? Obviously not.

    U r an asshole!!!
  • bmxbandit #35 2 years ago

Lets hope it's not just Manhattan they have in the game ... it's a big area. They could be smart and move into areas just touched upon in other titles.

I want more games set in San Francisco. San Francisco would be a good place for killing aliens/Koreans/whatever.
  • TheGuvernor #37 2 years ago

    @metalangel:

    m8, I chose not to buy MW2.
I've been with IW since day 1 but won't support their greed & consolification of a great franchise.
    Here's to DICE!
  • Maus0r #38 2 years ago

@Dr_Strange: Have you been living under a rock? The console version will be identical to the PC version, a la every other multi platform release just recently. Dragon Rising? Modern Warfare 2? Identical. Leaving PC owners bereft of any exclusivity seems to be all the bloomin' rage these days *sniff*

@MrsPacMan: You type the word 'obviously' but abbreviate the word 'You'? lol
