Crisis Core FFVII gets Euro date News

PSP News by Robert Purchese

16 January, 2008

Square Enix has finally given Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII a European release date of "spring".

For those unsure, this is the action RPG that caused PSP sales to multiply six times over in Japan last September.

Set before the renowned Final Fantasy VII, you play as Zack who works for SOLDIER, a military group run by an electric company busy at work on building a metropolis.

The game begins when you, Angeal and Sephiroth are sent to investigate the whereabouts of some missing SOLDIER members. Complications ensue.

Crisis Core was among the first games announced for PSP, and its lengthy development means gorgeous visuals and cutscenes to put others to shame.

But its big selling point, the real-time and fast-paced battle system, is yet to be proven. Perhaps we needed more time with it, but when we saw it last May it felt fiddly and unconvincing.

Could be wrong though - Japanese magazine Famitsu gave it a score of 35/40.

Head over to our Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII preview for a closer look.

Did they give a year along with that "Spring"? Not that it's particularly important - Advent Children was enough to warn me off Square Enix's "let's milk our most successful franchise" march.

Yeah, Advent Children deserves to die. Why have they made Cloud a depressed emo for the compilation stuff? If they remake the original and retcon him to be the absolute self harmer he's made out to be in AC I'm going to cry.

Still, at least Zack seems normal in this. When is the US release date again?

I'm still curious but not so much because of the FF VII link. Will wait for the review texts (scores don't mean anything).

FF7 REMAKE!!!

There is a topic which hasn't been flagged up for a while =]

In all fairness though, why would i want to play as a 'failed FF7 hero' who got pwnd by Seipheroth?

ive got this on japanese import it is sweet, graphics are awesome, the cutscenes are something else and look better than the advent children film because of the psps small screen, fighting system is a bit button bashy,

I dont know much japanese but i am easily progressing through the game with just hacking at enemies and barely using any magic or healing although if you have to the menu layout is fairly simple in game and and on the pause menus

Great idea - let's release games based on the current weather :)

Heard on TV in 2010 : "Here's Tom with the weather... Tom, what games are coming out tomorrow ?"

Well I thought this looked pretty interesting until I read the preview and saw that it has random battles. I can just about tolerate random battles in a tactical RPG like FF Tactics, but it's absolutely unforgivable in an action RPG.

Ah, so you actually play this one then.
After FF12's automated gameplay I thought the next logical step would be to remove the gaps between the cutscenes alltogether and just make the entire game out of CGI and Quick Time Events.

I usually don't import games from the US, but I'll make an exception for Crisis Core :)

Yes. Did you play Dirge of Cerberus? Watch Advent Children? See how much Square seem to be bastardising one of the greatest games in history for the sake of a higher revenue? None of these new "Compilation" games hold a candle to the original, so I'm not too enthused about them.

I tried a bit of that Japanese version too and the production values are indeed through the roof. The cutscenes look fantastic and the in-game graphics are also of a very high quality. But that is to be expected, of course. The combat is quick-paced and slick, and as far as I could see it was rather easy to dispatch of the early enemies in the game with stylish and dangerouus looking moves, although I have only given it a little time because I see no point in playing a FF game without understanding the story (and I don't know any Japanese, sadly).

Only about 50 times :-) He wasn't depressed during the course of the game. I guess he was when he was a Shinra guard but it hardly makes sense to apply that to a film that takes place 7 years after that.

During the present-day course of the game he goes from cold to determined fairly rapidly. He even cracks a joke or two. Just because he mourned Aeris for a few minutes doesn't make him an emo.
