Creatures series added to GOG News

PC Retro News by Robert Purchese

20 November, 2009

The Creatures series has been added to GOG.com. For $9.99 you'll get Creatures: The Albian Years (Creatures 1 & 2), Creatures Exodus (Creatures 3 & Docking Station) and Creatures Village (Creatures Adventures & Creatures Playground)

Creatures is a game that used clever programming to simulate life and allow players to breed animals with unpredictable results, which itself resulted in a strong online following and lots of sequels. You could think of it as a precursor to Spore.

But the only review on Eurogamer is for Creatures 3, and it's not exactly a recommendation at 2/10.

GOG.com has also added golden oldie Beyond Divinity as it said it would when announcing the release of Divine Divinity a couple of weeks ago.

Oh dear. Incredible AI, they said. Dumb, idiotic little turds is what we got.

Dear god that Creatures 3 review linked in the article is terrible. I honestly believe that it was written by a 12-year old, with an overuse of exclamation marks, piss-poor jokes, very little about the game and even a criticism of the box art.
Dear god.
Perhaps a series retrospective would be a good idea? I remember actually rather enjoying this game back in the day. I think it even came out on the GBA at one point.

They were idiots but they were lovable idiots.

I'll be picking up the original for old times sake.

Warlords III next please. Reign of Heroes, not Battlecry.

@ Cragtek: Thing is that it was incredible AI but the incredible thing wasn't that it apeared to be any good, the incredible thing was genuine AI rather just than a simple set of behavioural rules that govern behaviour directly and give the illusion of intelligence such as those that govern Sims. Academically that's very interesting but as a game probably not so great. I dunno, I never bothered to actually play them, I just read about the theory.

While i love GOG and it has some great weekend offer's, the recent additions have hardly been stellar. Beyond Div is awful. I hope they manage to get some of the real old classics like Outcast, Planescape, or some gem's i missed out on first time around.

Sadly I don't think there will be a GOG-release of Planescape: Torment, as Interplay just re-released it themselves, for example: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plane-Scape-Torm...

The stuff crafted by the modding community is truly superb, however.

A fundamental flaw in the design of their brains lead to early-onset alzheimers in the ones that came with the game, but that was fixable.

@ Nithron: So? Why should games be cheap just because they're old? You'll still get the same entertainment won't you?

Yeah, I know, you're both right, it is worth the money even though it's old. But basically every other game that old is about a fiver now, so when a company tries to charge more, it seems like a ripoff.

@ #4 - Too right, 'Clyde Radcliffe Exterminates All The Unfriendly Repulsive Earth-ridden Slime' was excellent!

I haven't played any of the games in the series, but I own the third part.
The review of it is indeed very poor. It basically just complains about the graphics and the sound...and that's it!

Also - on reflection, everyone complaining about these not being the "real" Creatures games should go and do something better with their time, like suing Mobigame for their game not being the "real" Edge...
