Cook with Wii News

Wii News by Robert Purchese

29 March, 2007

505 Games has pulled out the rolling-pins and announced Cooking Mama for Wii, due for release on 11th May.

It's an update of the already available and successful DS game, which pops you in the boots of a young chef eager to rustle up some culinary concoctions. You'll be under the watchful eye of Mama the whole time, who also happens to be a bit of a perfectionist, as you whisk out everything from toast to gourmet specialities from ten different nations.

However, as you'd probably guessed, the main draw of this digital cook-book is the control system. The combination of the Wiimote and nunchuck will add a much more hands-on feel when dabbling in the virtual kitchen, opening up a new world of interaction and play styles.

We liked the DS version when we got to grips with it last year, though it eventually came up a bit shallow. Pop over to our Cooking Mama review to find out more.

Meanwhile you can salivate over to our Cooking Mama Wii gallery for the latest screenshots.

Ds version was great for about 15 mins. Shallow as a puddle I'm afraid. far better off, getting up and going into the kitchen where you'll find this innovative new device called a 'frying pan', it responds to movements you make with your wrist and everything. Genius.

Loved the DS version. Inspired me try making some of the dishes. 'Boiled Egg' was a favourite.

Well, if it teaches real recipes of tasty japanese dishes I might get this. Sure, I could also just get a cookbook. Which might be more useful in the long run. Hmm...

LOL.

You know it's funny.. i'd quite happily go out and see a film which got 3 out of 5.. but a game which gets 7/10, is apparently shite.

Weird eh?

See this is my problem why am so hesitant on the Wii. These are not the games i look to playin on my home console. Hell i wouldn't even buy this for my PSP but am sure some will. Many talk about the PS3 needs more games, well hell the PS3 is gettin a steady stream of games now right. So what about the Wii are you happy with Cookin Mama or what its called?

"Many talk about the PS3 needs more games"

No .. it needs more EXCLUSIVE games to make it worth getting (i.e. not conversions of year old 360 games). If i can get a game for the 360, then there's no point in me paying 500 quid for a ps3 to play it (especially if said game looks the same).

"So what about the Wii are you happy with Cookin Mama or what its called?"

Nope.. Not a game i'd want to play. But then i'm not the audience it's aimed at.

Why the hell are DS games being ported to the Wii???. Maybe this is Nintendo's screwed up concept of backwards compatibility. I've been struggling to get my hands on a wii for weeks and now I thank Nintendo for screwing their deliveries up because that moneys going straight to a PS3 fund.

hey smelly, seems the PS3 now went up in price to £500? your paranoia is getting the better of you.

as to the screenshots, is there some reason why wii screenies always look so incredibly arse? but seriously, the paella really does look like vomit. i think this might be better represented on an actual next-gen console, like the 360. not the PS3 tho, obv, 'cos they probably cost like £550 by now.

or somesuch.

>My kids will love this

There in lies the problem. All games seem to be reviewed along the lines of every other game out there. Now this seems like a good idea, no?

BUT if you're doing a review of a movie (say) little nemo, you wouldn't mark it down because it's not in the same league (in terms of a movie) as (say) casablanca (generally regarded as a classic). You'd judge nemo on it's merrits as film for mainstream audiences (or non film nerds).

.. But yet games for mainstream audiences (or non gaming nerds) dont seem to take that into account.

If you get me?

This isnt a game for me, (as i am a gaming nerd). But then i think it should be judged on its merrits for non gaming nerds (in the same way as a film would be).

(this makes sense in my head - but it's hard to write down)

I don't get this. I enjoy cooking, so I can do it for real and have something tasty like cake at the end of it. Surely a game should offer something that isn't possible in real life, this just seems like all the effort for none of the edible reward.

Yes, and I love Tetris because I love spending time organising boxes only to have the same messy house that I started with.

And I love sports-sims. All that time spent playing Virtua Tennis, with none of the annoying health benefits of the real thing.

And driving games! Oh man, all that driving with no need to leave home!

And don't even ask about maths-based puzzle games and their non-effect on my pile of paperwork.

Still... at least you can't poison yourself with Cooking Mama!
