Conflict demo on US PSN, XBL News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

1 February, 2008

While PAL PS3 owners poke the online shop with their toes to check if those new PSone games still have motor function, our friends in America are being invited to check out a demo of Conflict: Denied Ops.

The US PlayStation Blog update on the subject sheds little light on what's included, although we do know that it adds up to 988MB, but you can read what we made of it in a recent Conflict: Denied Ops preview. A recent PC demo included single-player and co-op bits.

The full game tries to improve on the other Conflict games by simplifying things to attract new players. It's due out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 from 8th February, so watch out for a review soon. Let us know what you make of the demo, providing you have a top secret US account for downloading such things.

(Update: We were wondering when the inevitable Xbox Live Marketplace version of the demo would show up. That time is now. It too has single-player and co-operative bits and weighs in at 736MB.)

I tried it late last night and it's yet another insipid, dull, generic FPS with no redeeming qualities whatsoever which is very disappointing as I enjoyed the first two Conflict games on the Xbox. The weapons feel weak (even with rumble) and it takes an unrealistic number of shots to take down enemies. Level design is uninspired and boring, graphics are mediocre and there's loads of tearing too. Looks and feels unfinished to be honest.

Shame to see this franchise go downhill.

They should have strived for larger areas with vehicles that you could use to assault the enemys positions any way you wanted and stayed with the style of the old game. Why they chose to go for a FPS that feels like its constantly running in slow motion is beyond me.

Finally the backlash against constant FPS' has arrived. Now maybe we'll start to see developers look at new ideas.

@penhalion - "Finally the backlash against constant FPS' has arrived. Now maybe we'll start to see developers look at new ideas."

Amen to that. The FPS genre is an easy cash cow for developers, particularly on the Xbox 360 where the Yanks are likely to snap up anything with guns and excessive violence in it! LOL

The potential for really good FPSs is there - BioShock is a good example IMO - but there's too many coming out that stick to a boring blueprint and offer nothing you haven't seen a million times before in other games (and usually better!). Thank goodness for stuff like Condemned 2 is all I can say otherwise the first-person genre would be f*****!

I can't understand why these companies are releasing all these crap generic FPS's so soon after COD4? Do they not realize that will show their games in a REALLY bad light?

I know 360 gets far too many but I'm all for FPS games as long as they are good! At least we have R6: Vegas 2 and Condemned 2 in March!

so you don't think R6 Vegas 2 (CHRIST CAN'T THEY EVEN THINK OF A NEW CITY) isn't generic then?

i am so sick of Tom Clancy games. sheesh.

Ditto. The license has well and truly been overused and Ubisoft seem content to keep churning out lazy sequels that they know well sell by the bucket load instead of creating new IPs. Yeah, that's how you survive in a fiercely competitive business but it doesn't change the fact that it makes for an extremely dull selection of very samey games IMO.

That's an urban myth. Apart from Halo (and PS3 has the Resistant thing), which FPS's 360 has that PS3 doesn't ? I mean is PS3 the RPG box and 360 the shooter box?

I guess we're all a bit stuck on Xbox; PS2 gen.

@Miiiguel - The top two selling games on the Xbox 360 by miles are Halo 3 and Gears of War (with something like 6 million+ sales each then the third place game is 2 million odd) and on the Xbox it was Halo 2 and Halo. On the PS3 it's Resistance and MotorStorm with roughly 2 million each then there's a drop off to 500,000 units for third place game. I guess that's why people associate the Xbox platform with shooting games! LOL

Yea, but the 3rd & 4th & 5th best selling games on Xbox are Splinter Cell, Fable & PGR after Halo 1 & 2 and on the 360 Forza, Marvel Alliance & Assassin's Creed are after Halo 3 & GOW. So why the shooters only label, I dont know?

Vegas generic? OK it a special ops team and so on, but the gameplay was awesome in Vegas 1! Best cover system out there! I actually like they are going back to Vegas it was surreal having gunfights while slot machines were going off around you!

@ miiiguel

Come on man I love 360 but it's not a myth! In the last two years we've had COD2,3 & 4, R6: Vegas, Bioshock, Condemned, Hours Of Victory, Medal Of Honour Airborne, Shadowrun, Far Cry Instincts, Halo 3, Perfect Dark Zero, The Darkness, Prey, FEAR, FEAR files, Timeshift, Blacksite, Jericho, Battlefield and Orange Box . We've also Dark Messiah and Oblivion (OK they're not shooters but still first person).

With Turning Point, Turok, Conflict, Battlefield Bad Company, R6: Vegas 2, Condemned 2 and god knows what else coming this year, you have to admit we are MORE than OK in that genre!

R6: Vegas was awesome, although a slightly disturbing detour from Raven Shield.

Now on topic, it feels a bit mean to admit this, but the Conflict demo really wasn't good. Very, very bland action.

I tried the 360 demo last night, it's a little bit better than the PS3 version graphically (less tearing) plus it benefits from better controls IMO but it doesn't change the fact that the core gameplay is still weak and it's all very mediocre really.
