Codemasters unveils Damnation

Fresh new Gears of War-like shooter.

Codemasters has unveiled a new shooter called Damnation for PC, PS3 and 360.

It's due out this winter and is described as Gears of War meets Prince of Persia meets the Wild West.

You play as Rourke but appear to be followed around by a female companion who we expect will be co-op controllable, although specific multiplayer options are yet to be detailed.

The Gears of War similarities are immediately apparent from the environments in the first batch of screenshots, as well as the third-person shooter mechanics.

The Prince of Persia similarities come from the ability to explore levels on a vertical axis; hopping around the place or doing stunts to cross impenetrable chasms. Incidentally there will also be over-the-top vehicles like motorbikes that can leap gaps like Morpheus and Tanks that can take bullets like 50 Cent.

The Wild West inspiration comes from a Wild West setting. Simple.

Blue Omega is the development force behind it, and had its work commissioned after a Damnation prototype won the Make Something Unreal tournament hosted by Epic Games.

Sounds interesting.

    Could be nice, yes. Lets face it: Prince of Persia would have been a much better game if the Prince had been a motorcykle.

    "This winter" means, uh, next winter, right? As in Q4 or something? Or is this actually imminent, as spring is pretty much right around the corner but not quite yet, right?

    Wild west leaves me cold. except for Sunset Riders. I hope they subvert the setting by adding Robocop or getting Spinal Tap to sponsor it or something.

    This would be absolutely hilarious if the summary was completely literal and it actually consists of Marcus Phoenix(Or the guy from UT3, they're exactly the same person) running around in a Clint Eastwood movie trying to save the Persian Empire by jumping across ridges.

    Bonus points if you run into Lara Croft doing the same thing half way through and deflate her boobs with a giant needle.

    To my surprise, upon finding the press release of this game's announcement, I found that far from merely being an amalgamation of 2004's heaviest hitters, Damnation includes:
    "daredevil acrobatics and high-octane vehicle-based stunts. Presenting players with an intense test of reflexes, quick thinking and rapid-fire conflict, Damnation will feature vast, breathtaking landscapes, each covering miles of distance and thousands of vertical feet."

    I really hope it makes it out this year - no rushing! - as it sounds like it could be a lot of fun. :D
