Codemasters unveils Bodycount FPS

Made by Black creator Black. Due 2011.

Stuart Black, co-creator of Criterion's superb game Black, is making a new first-person shooter for Codemasters called Bodycount.

He is creative director and his project is scheduled for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 in Q1 2011.

Set in the present day, Bodycount follows the story of a no-questions-asked task force ordered to kill "Targets" on behalf of a "Network". Destructible cover will feature, as will online multiplayer and co-op.

Underneath Bodycount lies Codemasters EGO engine, which has been used to good effect in DiRT 2 and the well-received Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising.

“We're all massive FPS fans and believe that there’s room for a refresh of the shooter experience. If Race Driver: GRID was all about the purity of racing, then everything in Bodycount is absolutely centred on the bullet and its impact on the world," offered Black.

"Our shredding tech enables us to create a different kind of gameplay, where players and AI can't hide behind indestructible cover and rely on whack-a-mole mechanics. Here the environment is constantly changing as the game world is shot to hell; it's going to be a huge amount of fun."

Check out our Bodycount gallery for the first couple of shots.

"the well-received Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising"

Oh the irony. I loved Black but I hope Codemasters doesn't screw this one up, too.

So like battlefield bad Company then?

Awesome news. Black is a personal favourite of mine from last gen.

They will probably stop supporting the game after its out for 6 months.
Definately not going to buy anything from Codemasters anymore

    Does it star Ice-T?

A bigger and badder Black, with co-op. Sold.

I understand some of the reservations above about Codies but they're not developing this game, only publishing it and they do have a pretty good track record of not interfering with third party devs, for better and for worse.

Errrr - yes they are. Codies own the Guildford studio where this is being developed, and it is being developed on Codies own internal tech.

After Op Flash Dragon Rising, if this is anything less than utterly amazing, then I won't be touching it. The Codies lied to us and screwed us with OFP:DR, so they're really going to have to pull out all the stops before I even consider buying another one of their games.

Great, another FPS. Just what we needed.
  • Baranga #11 2 years ago

Because all FPS games are exactly the same. Herp derp.

Black was a great game, unfortunately Codemasters has got their fingers on this one. I think I'll give this one a miss. Codemasters will probably say all types of crap to sell this game, which after OF:DR we know will be all lies.

"Errrr - yes they are. Codies own the Guildford studio where this is being developed"

I'm sure the last article to mention this game actually named the studio. If that studio is just the name for the team Codemasters Guildford then I stand corrected, perhaps I should have said "it's not being developed by the same people who made Floppers"
  • metalangel #14 2 years ago

Yeah, who exactly received OFP:DR "well"?! As opposed to receiving it as it was, a big pack of lies and broken promises wrapped in shit design and trading solely on a name it neither earned nor understood.
  • jebus #15 2 years ago

    @Murton

Yeah - all the studios internally have different names but you're correct in assuming that it is a different team that made Flashpoint.

It's not an assumption, I know the main work of the main studio quite well.

Well the EGO engine looked pretty average in OpFlash, so they got their work cut out...
  • NGCes26294BIV #18 2 years ago

Wow... you OpFlash guys just can't get over DR, can you.

Suck it up. This is a different team, a different game, a new IP (which is ALWAYS welcome), and another chance for Codies to get it right.

OFP might've been a misstep, but their driving titles are solid and they've certainly got the talent to create something decent.

Plus, Black was awesome. Except for the unskippable cutscenes - they were balls.

It's called Bodycount? It makes it sounds like a cheese-tastic 80's action movie...... sold!
  • Ducklord #20 2 years ago
