COD7 Vietnam rumours resurface
Casting call hints at characters.
Speculation that the Treyarch-developed Call of Duty 7 is set during the Vietnam War has resurfaced following an Activision call for motion capture and voice-over actors
The casting sheet outlines the roles of four central characters, the leader of which - Frank Barnes - works for the Studies and Observation Group (SOG) that's based in Vietnam. That setting is backed by the post-WWII descriptions of the three other squad members, although Vietnam is not specifically mentioned.
Barnes is an "old warhorse" in his late forties who has a "gravelly" but "authoritative" voice. "A fiercely patriotic veteran of WWII, Frank is a solid leader, possessed with an excellent ability to assess and respond to any situation quickly and decisively. In other words - nothing fazes him," reads the description, spotted by VG247.
Barnes is joined by Joseph Lewis, Jason Hudson and Kristina Ivanova. Lewis, a black male in his late twenties, is something of an army prodigy - albeit a small, wiry and silent one. Hudson's a big lump in his mid-thirties who excels at the tactical side of warfare but can clearly pack a punch if needed, apparently.
Finally, Ivanova is a Russian who fled her homeland and wound up working for the CIA. She's in her late twenties, is an expert at martial arts and isn't trusted by her US colleagues.
Call of Duty 7, whatever it may be, will be developed by Treyarch and be released this year.

I heard they were licencing all those classic sixties rock-and-roll songs for this game (jefferson airplane, the doors, rolling stones, etc.) Not sure, but it sounds cool...
But, the US lost the Vietnam war... How does that make for a compelling Call of Duty narrative? Will the final mission be the evacuation of Saigon?

@cianchristopher
All that song licencing and they might as well rename it Tour of Duty.

I wonder what they'll do about co-op, although I loved spec ops I hope they do a proper co-op campaign

There'll be a night mission with the Viet Cong popping out of holes, a chopper mission with you on the MG, some flamethrower action here and there (as they spent all that time coding it for WaW), a sniper mission a la Full Metal Jacket. and a rousing assault on a base at the end possibly ending in a big napalm explosion.
Throw in some period music and stock characters from movies and a multiplayer that slightly expands on the WaW offering (possibly shoehorning some air drop/care package type option in there) and watch the Xmas big bucks roll in.

I can't help but think they're arriving a bit late to the Vietnam games party (about a decade too late). Also, while the inevitable jump from a Huey into a hot LZ in the bush will be cool, it would be cooler if this was a Battlefield type game and that Huey was being flown by another player, instead of this being another scripted ride through the gaming equivalent of an amusement park ghost house.

Then again, lose the fucking perks and kill-streak rewards and I'd be happy.

As they did with WW2, I'm guessing the Americans will attempt to re-write history. In this case the re-writes will centre around how, in actual fact, they won the war.

Also, I'd like to see more vehicles. Seems like a way to push the frachise forward a bit.

WHat war will be next? I suggest WW1: I mean, tons of people died, that was hella fun. And it featured bayonets and chemical warfare, too.

Yeah a WW1 game would be cool, maybe nearer the 100th aniversary we'll see something.

For one, an arse-ton of different countries fought on both sides. Definitely some interesting perspectives bound to be hidden in there.
Vietnam is OK, but everyone knows everything there is to know about Vietnam. Shine some light on Korea instead.

With Treyarch doing Vietnam, let's wait and see.

I only hope that the temptation to stereotype the Vietnamese is avoided. Having spent a month there, I could easily spend a year there because the people are so great.

But now it's fashionable to bash MW:2 it seems people are reversing that opinion. How long before Treyarch are the new cool cats and IW are evil bastards?

That sounds awesome.
