COD4 is AIAS Game of the Year
As BioShock takes the most awards.
Activision's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was selected as 2007's Game of the Year at the 11th annual Interactive Achievement Awards, GamesIndustry.biz reports.
The awards, hosted by actor/comedian Jay Mohr and presented at the 2008 D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas, are voted upon by members of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences.
This year, the Academy presented Ken Kutaragi, creator of the PlayStation, with its Lifetime Achievement Award.
"Ken Kutaragi is the smartest guy in the history of the videogame business," said Trip Hawkins, founder of EA and himself an AIAS Hall of Fame member.
"Without Ken, there is no Sony PlayStation and that is beyond comprehension."
Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime was also honoured as the newest AIAS Hall of Fame Member.
Call of Duty 4, Bioshock, The Orange Box, Rock Band and Assassin's Creed led the nominees. Although Bioshock won the most awards, it was edged out by Call of Duty 4 in both the Console Game of the Year and Overall Game of the Year categories.

"Cellular game of the year - Skate"
Laughing Out Loud.
Rock Band is a natural extension to Guitar Hero, and Skate is an average mobile game.
Want to see real mobile GOTY material?
Try Solarola, Urban Attack, Kamikaze Robots...

That's why they have a separate award for music composition.

Outstanding achievement in the use of Achievements in a rhythm action game released on XBLA, anyone?

So does that mean the soundtrack award is reserved solely for games with licensed "who's got the most money" soundtracks?!

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare"
Yeah, they managed to implement a lousy client/server model where the host is in charge of whether a game continues or not, and with non-existent matchmaking of any real depth...way to go!!!

As for the matchmaking, well I disagree, they implemented a ranked system for public games, yet never implemented any sort of TrueSkill matchmaking (no matter how lame it is), so you have people who are good at the game put into lobbies with complete novices. I'm halfway decent, but nothing special, and I can consistently have games where my k/d ratio is well over 8...if I didnt play HQ a lot to bring it down, i'd be embarrassed.
I'll not even go into the fact that you can get put into games that are virtually over by the time you enter, the spawn points are beyond a joke (especially in HQ) and there are some serious faults with host selection...I've been put in rooms where the host must have been using a dial-up to play ffs.
Decent online MP is much more than just pretty graphics.

Before Xmas I was continually seeing 300,000 people in the game lobbies, now you are lucky if it peaks at 85,000.
CoD4 is like a chinese meal, its tasty but after an hour you are still hungry.

RE: Matchmaking
You don't think this might be related to the party system then? You have to balance matchmaking with people available, take into account parties which have to be kept together and people who whinge if they aren't in a game within 5 seconds of searching.
RE: Popularity
It has just passed Halo3 as the most played game on the 360.

Fair enough, I just thought it got hyped a lot because of the animations, I haven't actually played it.

Do you ever try the Ground War games Fab4? Seems to me this is where the more dedicated players end up - if you are after more of a challenge.

Once again the console market shows how green it really is when it comes to gaming.

As with the CoD2 and 3, I particularly don't like the way the enemies respawn endlessly until you get a certain point on the ground that the game wants you to pass through. Once you realise this is how it works, the game just feels kind of fake.
If it had an online co-op mode, I might have enjoyed it more.
