COD: Black Ops detailed in USA Today

4-player co-op, switchable ammo, spy plane.

American newspaper USA Today has gained an exclusive look at a level of this year's Call of Duty: Black Ops, and has confirmed that the game's co-op mode will support four players.

The level, previewed in the paper and on its games blog, is called "WMD" and is set in Russia's Ural mountains in 1968.

Players begin by looking down on the action from an SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, directing a group of four black ops soldiers on the ground to guide them past a convoy of Russian troops. You won't be piloting the plane directly.

Then the action switches to the team on the ground as the four operatives infiltrate a Russian radar station. A scoped crossbow provides a stealthy sniping weapon, but by changing ammo on the fly - a new feature for the Call of Duty series - it's used to accurately place explosives.

Despite these touches, Treyarch's game isn't going to rewrite the series' rulebook. "The firefight that ensues is textbook Call of Duty," says USA Today, chaotic and intense, and cinematic moments include a dramatic rappelling scene and a cliff-hanging close.

Confirmation of four-player co-op comes in USA Today's interview with Treyarch head Mark Lamia. The article, ambiguously, describes this mode as "beyond the single-player story".

The game's story will encompass "at least two main characters in multiple covert international conflicts" over quite a long period of time during the Cold War. "We are not getting into the exact period of time, because it is part of our story that we are going to reveal later, but it does cover a longer period during this era," said Lamia.

Lamia revealed that it has done extensive research into the secret warfare of the period, consulting with a veteran of the innocuous-sounding Studies and Observations Group, a CIA-led black operations unit that fought in the Vietnam War. A former Soviet special forces soldier also contributed to the game. The modified crossbow, and its use to place explosives, is an example of a gameplay element that came directly from their accounts.

"Variety of gameplay. Variety of setting," are Treyarch's watchwords for Black Ops, Lamia said.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is due for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on 9th November.

So it's using the Cold War as an example of how frightening nuclear weapons really are and possibly trying to send a message that WMDs are wrong?

    Call Of Duty: Postmodern Warfare.

the "two main characters" thing is interesting - normally I'd guess that means single player has you switching from character to character, but with the reveal that four player co-op is in there does this mean it's another game where the single player bit is going multi?

Great, another mish-mash of missions vaguely strung together.

Being able to play through the campaign with three of your mates will be pretty cool.... Let's not kid ourselves, we're all gonna buy it (and MOH).

Not excited by this at all. And USA Today now get the scoop on the latest COD game? I think that's pretty much the icing on the cake for who Activision is now pitching at.

I'd say Activision is pitching at people who buy games, and contrary to the attitudes on here and other gaming sites, games are actually mainstream and enjoyed by more 'normal people' than those who generally just post hate fuelled negative comments on internet forums and reading gaming websites.

So yeah, i'd give a hugely visible setup like USA Today a scoop over http://www.gamesblog.com if i was a company that liked to make money. The other sites will get theirs in time.

It is really cliched, it's really just looking like it's going to be some good ol' fashioned American hand party propaganda. They never had the balls to touch the U.S.S.R and it appears the story is going to be a load of wank for the red necks.

Only buying it if there's a zombie mode

The four player co-op will sell it for me personally, as much as I hate Activision for their IW crap. I felt that Special Ops on MW2, wasn't served up anywhere as much as it should have been. It stupidly lack a search, lobby and invite system, and still amazingly has received no DLC, while being possibly the best thing about that game. It shouldn't all be about the multiplayer anymore, so I'm all for more co-op love.

End of this year will indeed prove interesting. Halo Reach, Medal of Honour and Black Ops. It will indeed be Modern Warfare. I'll be on MoH and Black Ops.

COD no longer has anything to offer anyone. Hell, the vague memories of the old MoH and CoD games, and the overwhelming horror of war has now fully given way to gung-ho "Ameri-Fuckin-ca" retardism. I dont normally complain about the storylines in fps' but seriously, what the fuck was MW2... 0.o

Treyarch is crafting unique co-op modes around cod black ops, but it is different than what people think. This time call of duty: black ops will deliver, USA Today doesn't know anything about the call of duty series!
