Co-op confirmed for Call of Duty 5

Online and offline. Plus flamethrowers.

Activision has confirmed the newest instalment in the Call of Duty series will feature an online co-op mode for up to four players.

That goes for the Xbox 360, PS3 or PC versions, which will also offer two-player split-screen co-op. The Wii game will have its own "unique" two-player co-op mode.

According to the press release, the co-op campaign "allows players to rank up and unlock perks in competitive multiplayer by completing challenges and earning experience points".

Said experience points are collected whenever you're playing online, whether competitively or co-operatively. The game's difficulty level will "scale dynamically" according to your experience rank and the ranks of the people you're playing with.

Playing as a US marine or Russian soldier, you'll get to fight it out on battlegrounds in Europe and the South Pacific. And it's been confirmed you'll get to muck about with a flamethrower.

Call of Duty: World of War will be out in the autumn. Look out for a full preview soon.

    Flamethrowers? Online?

    This might just be good then. I love flamethrowers online but I haven't found a proper one since Wolfenstein ET...

    But will the flamethrowers be as good as those found in HAZE?
  • thefilthandthefury #5 4 years ago

    Flamethrowers? I'm sold! That'll be brilliant.

    It's looking more promising than I thought, I do like offline co-op.

    I predict the "unique" co-op mode for Wii will be an on-rails shooter, which of course won't be a rip-off off anything from the Wii Medal of Honours.

    It's still WWII so that's a rejection from me.

    Maybe Treyarch will next time make something different...

    How about "Call of Duty 7: Out of Ammo" featuring special melee-based retreat action from Nazi soldiers' point of view? ;)

    flamethowers make baby jesus smile.

    Gasp. The first PC CoD which isn't going to have the British? They always seemed to get the best levels.

    And here I wanted to try and hold Fort Sentosa from the Japanese War Machine.

    Still, pacific war...not bad.

    After checking out the trailer on marketplace this week, I'm more excited about this now than I was last week...I actually think Treyarch may have made a very decent stab at this title...however, that is just based on looks, we'll have to see what the previews and demo are like.

    Did that article really say there will be split-screen co-op on the PC? That's amazing for an FPS game (though I wouldn't really use it) - can't remember anyone doing that since Serious Sam.

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    I've said it in the forum and I'll say it here; Co-op - this gens most OVERRATED and OVERUSED feature.

    Its the new 3D.

    I miss Serious Sam...

    "Take it you've never seen Sam Peckinpah's Cross of Iron before eh MKorkia?"

    Great WWII movie Vertical Stand! :)

    @LetsGo

    I do not mind having coop, since this was the one thing I was missing in the last-gen online gaming, but nowadays it usually means the same game, but now it is the two of us shooting the same enemy. What I miss is a more tactical approach, where coop has a point, like distraction, supressive fire, sniping etc with more freedom of movement.

    But this would not be causal enough....

    World War II is over. Leave it the alone. There are plenty of other theatres of war to base your game around.
  • mikeck #21 4 years ago

    Why is it that the term 'theatres of war' is used so readily now in the game industry? I understand that they're not actually describing war as theatre, but still it's a bit of a silly term no?

    Or am I being silly for questioning this? :)

    Don't agree with those who claim the WW2 setting has been done to death.

    I like FPS and buy a couple each year. New technology, new game engines, new gameplay elements mean that the WW2 setting seems pretty interesting to me still.

    Will definitely buy this. The Call Of Duty series is a geniune triple A product.

    Why don't they do a game set in Afganistan, where you kill anyone that looks like they are from CARRY ON.... UP the KHYBER?

    (/sarcasm) World War 2 is over!? Really? (/sarcasm)

    Computer gaming hasnt even scratched the surface of World War 2. They've overdosed on the push East towards Berlin from the D-Day landings, yes, but it was a world war ffs. You could make an original game based on the Battle of Monte Cassino and the push through Italy from Northern Africa, or the Scandinavian theatre, or Operation Barbarossa and the Eastern Front, or South-East Asia (Malaya, Singapore, etc), or if you wanted something completely different you could have a game based on the conflict between China and Japan during the 2nd World War.

    WW2 isnt done, boring, etc, and if it is, then its as boring as the 'send in special forces to depose evil *insert Russian/Arab/3rd world country* dictator before he goes nuclear' scenarios which count for the majority of modern shooters.

    @biscuitbase

    You bastard, i wanted to use that line

    I fear the flame throwers in haze shall go down in legend
  • Bleh #26 4 years ago

    Coop and Call of Duty game combine should be a great combination. I'm only a bit sceptical if the final release will truly have coop. It has been said many times before and many times canceled.
  • t8yman #27 4 years ago

    @mikeck

    "Theatre Of War" is the correct term for where a war is taking place.
  • mikeck #28 4 years ago

    @t8yman

    Okay, cheers for that ;)

    Just always struck me as an odd term.

    "The Wii game will have its own "unique" two-player co-op mode."

    I sense a spin in the force.
