Civilization Wii on indefinite hold

Firaxis focusing on 360 and PS3.

2K Games has announced that the Wii version of Civilization Revolution has been put on hold indefinitely.

A spokesperson told Eurogamer developer Firaxis wants to put all of its efforts into building the "next-generation" versions.

Which means PS3 and 360 outings, plus a DS game, are still due out this spring.

Civilization Revolution is a fully-fledged instalment in the series - no worries about a quickly cobbled together and dumbed down port here. 2K Games is also keen to emphasise it is spending hours and hours on getting the interface right for consoles, believing few have nailed it so far.

Specifically it will have a strong online component, with streamlined games for fewer day-long head-to-head matches. On top of that will be voice and vision chat so you can see the effect of your plans on your opponent, and 16 civilizations to test your tactical tenacity with.

It looks frightfully handsome too, much like me. Ogle at it in our Civilization Revolution gallery.

Well I don't know. I really hope it's good (especially the DS version), but the previews at Apolyton (which seems to be the only site on the whole internet that has some in-depth information about the game) don't sound entirely convincing to me.

I hope they also allow for the old slow, long-winded type of game, where you and your opponents can agree to play for an hour and then save, and continue later. :) Probably not going to happen, but I would REALLY love that.

To be honest, I'd much rather have a refined XBLA version of Civ IV that a whole new game. I can't imagine myself looking at a game shelf and thinking, "Oh I'll put Civ on". The reason it's one of my most-played PC games is coz I tend to fire it up to relax while working at the computer, or to wind down after an intense shooter, or something.

^It'll probably come with different gamespeed much like the PC version.

CivRev definitely has potensial, and ill buy it for my ps3 no matter the reviews it get. But i agree that a PSP version would be premium. Playing civ with decent graphics on the bus = awesomeness!

Prioritise that DS version, Firaxis. You know it makes sense.
  • Totoriko #8 4 years ago

Exactly, priority should be for the portables.

For the PSP, perhaps it would be helpful to start with if Civ Rev supported Remote Play? Also, the way it looks now makes me feel it could be a fine PSN release, installable on the HDD would be perfect.

Agreed, this should be a downloadable game. It really looks like something that would be offered on PSN/XBLA. Plus the Civ games have always had a more pick-up-and-play thing going for them, where you can just jump in and play for a bit... having the game come on a retail disc would make that much more tedious.

Shame the PSP version got canned. I worry that the DS will be a bit too stooopid for Civ, really, and then there's the diminished cartridge space, meagre screen estate etc... :/
  • dirigiblebill #13 4 years ago

...though given that the PS1 could hack Civ 2 (albeit not without hiccups) maybe there's hope yet :)
  • L42yB #14 4 years ago

I have to get this! Civ has always been awesome :)

@Arwin - There's a good chance they will... I mean, Splinter Cell did it with Co-op games since Pandora Tomorrow on the original Xbox! If they can do it then, Firaxis can do it now :D Long games are great provided you can play like an hour a day :)

  • riz23 #15 4 years ago

No Wii version makes sense. Apolyton has some info on this? I'll go check them out, but I'll be getting this regardless I suspect. They are the Civ/AC site after all. Now for the usual cry: Where's my Alpha Centauri 2 at? Come on Firaxis & EA can't you get together to sort something out?

How could Civ IV be a downloadable XBLA game? It's not exactly Frogger, but a DVD full to the brim, and that's without the addons. And I suspect Civ Rev won't be much different in that regard.

    @ Uncle Lou

You could certainly handle the graphics in an XBLA game; there's not much in the way of texture detail, really, is there? It actually looks a bit like Carcassonne. Granted, the game's pretty deep, but if you had to cut out Leonard Nimoy and the rendered bits, I don't think people would mind.

Basically, it's definitely do-able, even if some minor concessions have to be made. And despite having bought Civ a few times in the past, I'd probably fork out for an XBLA version, whereas I doubt I'll pay for a full-price edition. I love achievements, but not enough to put up with the rigmarole of changing a disc when I want to play such a chilled-out time-waster of a game.
  • UncleLou #18 4 years ago

So it should be an XBLA game, you don't want to change discs for it, it shouldn't even be full price, and you mention it in the same breath with Carcassonne? We are talking about Civilization here, right? ;)

FWIW, my installation folder of Civ IV has around 6 GB. I think you might be underestimating the game a bit, Leonard Nimoy or not...

The DS version is the one I'm waiting for, so I'm not too worried about this news.

Please don't mess this up, Firaxis...
