City of Heroes mission editor released News

MMO PC News by Oli Welsh

9 April, 2009

It didn't quite make it out in March, but City of Heroes' much-heralded mission editor has finally hit live servers.

The update, Issue 14: Architect, adds the Mission Architect system that allows players to author adventures in the superhero MMO, as well as browse and rate each other's content (globally - it links North American and European servers) and claim rewards for creating popular missions.

Additionally, there are some new player-versus-player match types and rewards included in the update.

There's a ton more information in the Issue 14 release notes. We'll have further coverage of Architect soon.

Amazing what these guys put out with such a small dev team.

The editor is even more powerful than I had hoped for. The stuff people are already putting out is great! But there's quite a lot of dross to sort through to find the good ones. Thank gods for the ratings system.

As with anything that allows user-created content, there will always be a mountain of chaff to sift through. Just look at LBP. As long as the search tool and player ratings system is robust, all is well.

Most of the player-made missions I've been in have certainly been inventive, but they tend to err on the hard side - as you'd expect for content from dedicated players. You can typically expect to be facing well-balanced mixes of abilities with synergies and targeted against the most common player weaknesses, such as Psychic damage.
