City of Heroes Issue 10 out

Help each other, spandexers.

NCsoft has just released free expansion Issue 10: Invasion for City of Heroes and City of Villains.

It will kick off with a server-wide event where you goodies and baddies will have to forget your super-grudges and unite against the evil Rikti, who really badly more-than-anything-in-the-world-Ron want to invade your planet.

The Rikti Crash Site has become the epicentre of the invasion, and is now know as the Rikti War Zone. Only those of you with powers between level 35 and 50 will be able to explore here, as you try to destroy Pylons and unexploded bombs to gain access to the mother ship.

But you'll get plenty of new bits to play around with and help you, including a new Workbench where you can make dazzling tight-fitting costumes to throw-off your opponents, as well as heavy support machines to do your bidding.

There's also plenty of other quests to get stuck into, and even a special Task Force challenge for those over level 45 in packs of six to eight.

"This expansion unleashes total war where aliens and earthlings get great new weapons to bludgeon each other with. We think this will be great fun," said chief commissioner Gordon. Er, lead designer Matt Miller.

"The fact that both heroes and villains need to join together to defeat a common enemy is a comic book convention that helps to add greater depth and excitement to City of Heroes and City of Villains."

You can pick up the Good Versus Evil Edition pack pretty cheaply these days, and it includes all of the expansions so far - although there's probably a lot of patching to do.

But if you want to try the super-hero MMORPG before you buy, then head over to our 14-day trial key giveaway that is miraculously still going.

Those of you already playing might want to turn your super-attention to the Eurogamers City of Heroes group to see what everyone else is up to. It's enormous and filled with spandex.

Does anyone actually care about these COH updates? I only ask as Eurogamer relegiously reports them and no one seems to take a blind piece of notice.

Previously when I've read these Issue release articles there are a few people who respond saying they might check out the game again - ex-players who let their subscriptions lapse. So I'd say they do serve a purpose.

More to the point, why do so many people moan about the news Eurogamer chooses to serve? Why not - and I know this is a pretty radical concept - just not read it?

Wasn't criticising as such, just observing that EG seem to spend a lot of time on this one game when compared to pretty much everything else, especially seeing that there doesn't normally seem that much interest. That said I am mildly tempted by this game I might just click on the free 14 day trial at the bottom... Or have I just answered my own question?

I've been meaning to give this a try. Will download tonight on spanking new PC...will probably uninstall Company of Hero's as it refuses to work!

On a side note to Company of Heroes, only just found out today on my 2nd watch through of Band Of Brothers, that it takes its name from the series...

That's probably a good idea, as you can't have two games with the same abbreviation on your PC. The universe will implode ;)

Oh man, I'd get back into this if I had money.

...and I hadn't suffered an social anxiety related panic attack whilst playing the game, causing me to be scared of MMOs.

@RexRunti: Fair play, it's a legitimate concern. :) I think the key thing with CoH/CoV is just how much time and support the devs put into these new issues. They really do involve massive changes to the game and build on it very effectively.

If you fancy giving one of the best MMORPGs a try, have a crack at the trial. I managed to get a solid 3 or 4 months play out of it (then a break, then another couple of months) before the higher-level grind became too much for me. And that was circa issue 7/8, so things have changed a bit since then (e.g. crafting has been added).
