Chrono Trigger travelling onto DS

"Countdown Site" points to E3.

Square Enix appears to be refitting Chrono Trigger for DS.

Initial evidence came from scans of not-often-wrong Japanese magazine Famitsu, which was later backed by a "Countdown Site" featuring a big clock and the abbreviation "ctds" at the end of the URL.

We've no idea what the site is counting down to, but an E3 announcement is probably a reasonable guess.

Chrono Trigger is the SNES role-playing game from 1995 that had you and your party travelling through time to save the world. It had multiple endings, side-quests, character development, a funky battle system and deservedly sparked wide critical acclaim. It also had the best videogame frog ever.

Tom says it was one of the best games on the SNES.

yay for CTDS BUT.... does this mean Chrono Cross could FINALLY hit EU too?

I'm not sure if I want a 2d version like the SNES one or a 3d remake like Final Fantasy 3 and 4. Enjoyed FF3 quite a lot on the DS but I also adore the 2d look of the SNES games. Still, if this finally makes it to Europe (although I really don't care because I can just import the US one) this is great news.

Great news indeed, i'm a happy panda.

    Is the clock counting down?

  • HiddenAway #7 4 years ago

No, I'm sure the clock takes your system time. It's just that everyone is so excited they haven't spotted it yet...

Don't get me wrong, I'm curious seeing as I hear the game being mentioned all the time but having never played a Chrono game, I'm still sane :-)

That's an interesting development. Had to pick up the PS1 version a while back to see what all the fuss was about. The scene in the court room was worth it alone.

"Chrono Cross could FINALLY hit EU too"

Chrono Cross was great, conquered a lot of new ground too. Well worth buying an old US PSOne for imo.

It's not counting down to anything. It's just a big clock that's pulling its time from your system clock, as HiddenAway says.
  • orakio #12 4 years ago

    @ Hiddenaway:

You're one of the lucky ones then. I'm generally excited that they'll bring Chrono Trigger to the DS, but having played the SNES version to death, back to life and then to death again, I know the game too well to experience it all over again.
Therefore, enjoy your first time on it, since the game is absolutely worth all the praise ;-)

Good news. I've always wanted to play this to see what all the fuss was about.

if this is true, it's the best news ever. loved square rpg's back in the snes days, and this was probably the best of the bunch... just a straight up remake will do me, with a bit of touchscreen menu access shenanigans in there as well (no need for microphone blowing tho, please).

It's a port. Fuck that. Fuck Squenix for getting my hopes up. :(
  • hoster #17 4 years ago

Chrono Trigger was the best game Square ever made, imho.

watch the internet explode with fear, rage, denial and elatement, all at once.
  • Bluetribe #19 4 years ago

Don't really care for ANOTHER remake or port, give us a true sequel already (yes, I'm not counting Cross).
  • WinterSnowblind #20 4 years ago

    @Nikanoru

They haven't said if it's a port, not that it would matter if it is. But it could be a full remake, like Final Fantasy III and IV on the DS. Can't say this news is surprising though, it was just a matter of time. Now, when will we see the Earthbound/Mother games?
  • Gradius #21 4 years ago

Well, it's good news for people who haven't played CT before, but being one of the best RPGs ever, I've probably completed it well over 30 times. So, unless this is a 3D remake or has something new to offer then I probably won't bother with it.
  • TheMoonRat #22 4 years ago

Gameplay wise, one of the best if not the best of squares rpgs. Great fun
  • aine #23 4 years ago

    I hope this isn't a 3D remake. DS 3D = PS1 3D = argh
  • Krelle #24 4 years ago

Im probably seen as a lunatic by most by saying this, but..for me, Cross is a better game than Trigger. Both are epic, but if I have to choose one, it would be Cross.

The Square PSX-era games are unbeatable. Xenogears, Cross, Vagrant Story, FFTactics topping the list.

I actually like 3D games on the DS, they look clean and run smoothly, like the N64.

It's the PSP I have more of a problem with, even though it technically has better graphics, they look more dated and ugly, and almost always tend to run at sub 30 frames a second.

Final Fantasy IV on the DS looks beautiful, even though it's pretty basic.

Anyone else a bit dissapointed as surely this means we won't see the original on VC any time soon. Been waiting on this for a while, and paying £30 for a DS game I'd been looking to download for £7-8 seems a ballache. On a side note I sorted all my stars out and have about 3000 points. any recommendations (no N64, still have mine and all the games including Sin and Punishment). Already have Gunstar Heroes, SSFII, Bomerman and Actionloop Twist. Was debating Link to the Past or Super Metroid. Ideas?

  • jambii267 #28 4 years ago

    YES YES YES YES *Cream*

I really hope this is true!

Hoping for a remake of Chrono Cross as well as it was awesome too.

I would buy both an original and/or a remake version. I never played it on SNES, but always wanted to. But I did love the FF3 remake.
  • OnlyMe #30 4 years ago

What about a Chrono Chronicles on the PS3, a remake of both games? It'd be even better than an FFVII remake!
  • dudefella #31 4 years ago

yeessssssssssss finally! CT to hit Europe at last! Now I may actually finish it for the first time. Must've played through the opening hours a dozen times.

"Anyone else a bit dissapointed as surely this means we won't see the original on VC any time soon."

The whole VC deal is dissapointing! The library of games is too small and not enough quality titles are being added to it . And Nintendo doesn't even care for giving us 60hz versions of the games. Why would I even pay for such? I'm glad there's the option to use a SNES emulator on my Wii.

    Great news, indeed.
