Charts: Japan hearts Kingdom Hearts News

PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

12 June, 2009

The Japanese software chart is ruled by Kingdom Hearts 358/2 for a second week, with Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth holding strong at two.

But numbers, when compared with last week's, are well down across the board.

Two new entries shake up the top 10. The first of these is Arc Rise Fantasia for Wii, which debuts at four. Made by Marvelous and imageepooch, Arc Rise Fantasia is a turn-based RPG that scored 32/40 in Japanese magazine Famitsu, for what it's worth. There's a video of Arc Rise Fantasia to watch on Eurogamer TV.

Evangelion: Jo is the other new entry this week, which arrives at six on PSP and 16 on PS2. This is an adaptation of a Japanese animated film that's based on a Japanese animated series. Confusing, isn't it. Namco Bandai's behind the wheel, and there's a trailer on YouTube to digest.

There's no shaking of the hardware hierarchy, although, again, sales are down.

Only thing interesting out of the sales is that in Japan all hardware sales went down except the 360's. How come?

The market is possibly starting to reach saturation point for the other consoles; as in an awful lot of Wiis and PS3 have been sold in Japan leaving fewer and fewer people who still want one but bugger all 360s have been sold there.

Those figures of 3:1 PS3:360 are still pretty amazing for the 360 in the region compared to the last generation (but they're still pretty hopeless as a whole).

I'd disagree that the PS3 is anywhere near saturation, only the saturation for this price point. Drop that and I think that they will get a lot more interest.

My bet: E3 and the Milo Effect. Japanese dig that sort of thing.

Definitely, drop the price in any region and the sales will increase but at this price point and coming into the summer I'm not surprised to see it drop off.

Primarily because it's the wrong comparison to make relative to last gen though: PS3 isn't exactly setting Japan on fire as the PS2 did. So they've gained against Sony but lost a lot of ground to Nintendo.
