Champions Online release delayed

Retreats to September, needs "more time".

Cryptic's superhero MMO, Champions Online, has had its release delayed from July 14th by September 1st to give it more time in development.

UPDATE: Atari has just confirmed that the game will release on September 1st in the US, and September 4th in Europe.

"It is critically important for an MMO to be as good as it possibly can be at launch," said design director, executive producer and mouthpiece Bill Roper on the Champions stie.

"Through our constant dialogue with our vocal and supportive community of beta testers, we quickly realized that in order to implement certain features that we all considered important the development of Champions Online would require more time," he continued.

"So that's what we're going to give it. Cryptic has a proven track record of releasing solid games and we want to maintain that with Champions Online."

Six weeks and a bit is a fairly modest delay as MMOs go, so here's hoping it sticks. Check out our recent beta impressions for the lowdown on the current state of the game.

Champions Online will release on PC first, with a "console" version or versions expected to follow. More on the gamepage.

The really annoying thing about the delay is that it'll probably still be a buggy mess even after an extra six week's dev time. If they're having a delay like this (Almost unheard of for MMOs) it must be in a pretty shocking state now.

On the other hand I WANT IT. Give me spandex, electric fists and criminals to use them on and I'm sorted. I just hope the combat is more interesting than the snorefest in City of Heroes.

That's a surprise, the beta feels pretty finished & well polished, certainly more so than the state some games have been released. Better to make sure it'll be great though, I suppose.
