Champions Online open beta in August News

MMO PC Xbox 360 News by Oli Welsh

29 June, 2009

Fansite Champions Online Daily News reports that Crytpic's superhero MMO will go into open beta testing in mid-August.

The site picked up the info on a visit to Cryptic HQ, and the developer subsequently put the stamp of authority on the news with an official link.

"A firm date has been pencilled in and although it's not 100 per cent confirmed, it is slap bang in the middle of August," said the fansite.

That would put it a couple of weeks ahead of the game's launch on PC, on September 1st in North America and September 4th in Europe. An Xbox 360 launch is currently scheduled for later in the year.

Champions Online is currently in closed beta testing. Check out the Champions Online gamepage for hands-on impressions and more.

Only a couple of weeks of open beta? Yes, open betas are akin to trials / demos these days, but surely having such a short open beta is a bit strange?

The closed beta is just as strange, they have specific play test dates and you can only play the game during those times. So I've not had a whole lot of time to play it.. What I have played was pretty good, but it just makes me wish someone would make a customiasable, offline, co-op, super hero sandbox game.

For MMOs, the released product often can be considered an unfinished beta anyway.
