Champions Online 360 this year - Atari News

MMO PC Xbox 360 News by Oli Welsh

29 May, 2009

Atari's latest financial results reveal that the publisher expects to release the Xbox 360 version of Cryptic's superhero MMO Champions Online this year, and follow it up with Star Trek Online before the end of March 2010.

The PC version of Champions Online recently had its release delayed from June to September 1st in North America and 4th in Europe.

Atari's earnings statement says the game will be released on "PC in September 2009, X-Box in Q3" of its 2009/2010 fiscal year. Atari's financial year runs from April to March, which would put release of the 360 version sometime between October and December of this year.

On Star Trek Online, also being developed by Cryptic, the statement says: "This game is expected to benefit from the success of the newest Star Trek film (release for the videogame is expected by the end of this fiscal year)." So that would be before the end of March 2010.

Cryptic's developers are clearly busy bees. "Cryptic Studios is working on the development of a series of new games based on Atari’s existing and historically successful IPs," adds the statement.

You'll find more at the Champions Online and Star Trek Online gamepages.

So, it's coming out on 360 then? may be worth keeping an eye on.

it always has been. But i do wonder now if the delay of the PC version is down to its 360 counterpart? I wouldn’t be surprised if they pushed it for simultaneous release.

They've already said they are striving for cross platform servers.

After watching Star Trek in the cinema three times the past few weeks, the MMO can't come quick enough!

All I can say is the game had better be perfect before release. Microsoft limit patch size and number of patches if done as a title update, so any major bugfixes / tweaks / balancing of classes etc would have to be a DLC package through the marketplace.

It's an MMO. I would expect it to get patched regularly, and there's simply is no possible way to released a fully class balanced MMO.

I suspect they would work out an agreement about frequent patching and patch size though. I believe the current patch/DLC restrictions are to do with memory cards, but as this would have to be an install-to-HDD game I guess those restrictions would be largely irrelevant.

"like FFXI."

I never played FFXI, what was it like for patching and new content and how was class balancing at the beginning?

Well because everyone is on the same servers (PC, PS2 and 360) patching happens across all three whenever a new patch goes live.

In regards to class-balance, it was never an issue, as the game was already 5 years established by the time it hit the 360.

well if its anything like the FFXI sub model, you only need a silver account and you pay the same sub as the PC users.

Atari never 'dies'...it just gets a new owner every few years.
