CG Resi film in works

Sony and Capcom join forces.

Capcom has said it will be joining forces with Sony Pictures Japan to make a computer-animated Resident Evil film.

Dubbed Biohazard: Degeneration, it will be the first full-length CG feature in the history of the franchise, and is due to air in cinemas next year. Biohazard is what the survival-horror series is called in Japan, in case you are only just crawling out of your grave and tasting a piece of slushy moss for the first time.

So far there have been three big-screen Resident Evil ventures, most recently Resident Evil: Extinction starring Milla Jovovich, which is now showing across the UK. Unfortunately none of the films have received much of a positive response, though.

That is in direct contrast to the celebrated series of games, however, with most recent offering Resident Evil 4 finishing as our second favourite title of 2005.

A fifth game is currently being worked on for PS3 and 360, which takes place amid a zombie break-out in Haiti. However, it was notably absent from Capcom's recent Gamer's Day line-up, and has also been mired by accusations of racism because nearly all of the baddies seem to be black.

Who ever expected good critical reviews of a Resi film???? All we want is action and zombies - which it delivers - plus hot looking stars which is a bonus... can't go wrong with that

    Biohazard: Degeneration

Why do I get the impression that this is a new urotsukidoji. ;)
  • ecureuil #3 5 years ago

Wow, completely unexpected but totally welcome news!
  • captainrentboy #4 5 years ago

Why in the bloody hell can't they do a CG Halo flick then? I mean, that short CG trailer from a year or so back excited me more than the full game did, dammit!

Halo-Schmalo, A RE CG movie sounds great to me :)
  • ZuluHero #6 5 years ago

i've actually enjoyed all the resi films to date - plus news of a CG one has me drooling...

I don't think i'll ever tire of the series :)

    Straight to Bluray video...

I know this is slightly off topic but this whole thing about resi5 being racist is such a load of crap, i'm currently playing through Resi 4 Wii edition and all through that they are all Spanish, what's the difference?

    @moz

    It's cuz der blak.
  • VMerken #10 5 years ago

    Inspired by Moz:
Yeah, so? In Crysis, you're shooting North Koreans. Deyr yello, so that game's just as racist as RE5. If RE5 is racist, then plenty more games are, yet noone created a ruckus about those. Which means the people calling this one out are using double standards.

I mean, by their reasoning, even Mass Effect is racist, what with all those different races you're going "interact" with. What, they're alien races, so it's okay? Xenophobe!

    (rant off)

Anyway, while it's nice to read this news, I'd prefer it if Capcom would just put all that talent on RE5 instead. To make it bigger and better than it already is, and to accelerate the release date. Just a thought.

Another videogame-based movie then? Degeneration sounds about right.

    This news makes me happy.

Could turn out to be the first decent Resi film actually...without the idiotic Hollywood politics.
  • Zomoniac #14 5 years ago

Since seeing the Halo and Halo Wars ads I can think of no good reason at all why a fully CGI Halo film would be as good if not better than a live action one.

"I know this is slightly off topic but this whole thing about resi5 being racist is such a load of crap, i'm currently playing through Resi 4 Wii edition and all through that they are all Spanish, what's the difference? "

Because you were shooting poor white people. In Resi 5 you'll be shooting poor black people, apparently that's wrong...
  • Nithron #16 5 years ago

It's not good critical reviews we're looking for, Goffee, it's a movie that's actually, you know, something to do with the game, that doesn't totally bastardize all the characters and the storyline.
  • Triggerhappytel #17 5 years ago

Racism aside, there seems to be a lot of love here for the Resi movies. I thought the first two were Godawful.

Needless to say I haven't watched Extinction yet. Not exactly holding my breath for this, either.
  • captainrentboy #18 5 years ago

I usually like any ole action/horror film, but Extinction was barely watchable, it was ever so slightly better than the second film, but that isn't exactly the highest of compliments.
As soon as Ashanti turned up, acting (I use that term very loosely) out the stereotypical, Ghetto talk, Black role I've seen in 15'000 other films, I knew I wasn't in for a good time.
The one 10 minute 'Highlight', was the scene in Las Vegas, 100 Zombies + Large metal crate + Milla and her trusty machetes= Mild amusement.

"it's a movie that's actually, you know, something to do with the game, that doesn't totally bastardize all the characters and the storyline. "

I think those are reserved for our dreams. Apart from Schindler's List I have trouble thinking of a movie that did a game/book/comic justice after it comes out well on the other side of the Hollywood bullshit treadmill...
  • dudefella #20 5 years ago

LOL @ accusations of racism towards REsi 5. They're all black? Gee, maybe because it takes place in Haiti?!?! What hypocrisy.
  • absolutezero #21 5 years ago

The Devil May Cry anime kinda half worked so it is possible to make Capcom games into other media.

Apart from the Resident Evil movies, which have nothing to do with Resident Evil.
  • Wyrm #22 5 years ago

Whats the bet that this will have an utterly impregnable plot?
  • ZuluHero #23 5 years ago

    only to non-fans :p
  • Feanor #24 5 years ago

I hope it's as good as the Animal Crossing movie. That was fun to watch even though it was only on youtube without English subtitles and I never played Animal Crossing, just watched my wife play the game a lot.
  • Nithron #25 5 years ago

    @Goffee
Idunno, Fight Club was pretty awesome. But your point is noted - most of the time, the conversion process just produces bollocks, however much greatness is put in the other end
(not that resident evil storylines are exactly literary masterpieces, but you get the idea)

    CG Resi film :/
Right then, if its going to be any good, this is how it should be done.

The film should ditch the zombies and do a resi 4.
The film should be a resi 4 type flick, and that's that!
  • vegard #28 5 years ago

as long as they keep it dark and gory i'm all for this:)

Accusations of racism from who? Bill Cosby? Jesse Jackson? Oprah?
  • The-Bodybuilder #30 5 years ago

    >"Bill Cosby?"

Don't you dare put bill cosby's name along with jesse jackson.
  • drxym #31 5 years ago

Resident Evil films are terrible. It's depressing to hear that people actually paid to watch them such that they can afford to make yet another one.
  • Bulbatron #32 5 years ago

This sounds like great news to me. I wonder if this film will stick to the continuity established in the games. While it isn't exactly water-tight, it is reasonably solid, and not having to rely on actors means that any of the characters from the games could be in the film, without having to worry about getting actors that look like them - if you know what I mean.

So a story based upon the game continuity would be good, rather than it inhabiting the strange parallel universe the films take place in.
