CCP to make announcement in August

World of Darkness? EVE: Walking in Stations?

Hilmar Petursson, boss of EVE Online developer CCP, is to give a keynote address at the Game Developers Conference Europe in August where he will make "an announcement on its latest project".

No further details are given, but CCP is known to have two major initiatives in development: the Walking in Stations extension to EVE, and World of Darkness, a mature horror MMO based on the White Wolf table-top RPG. Of course, Petursson might have something else altogether in mind.

"'Niche' is not a dirty word," reads the official keynote preview. "CCP grew from relative obscurity in the middle of the Atlantic to a major MMO company. CEO Hilmar Petursson will show what brought them here and share exclusive views into the future, including an announcement on its latest project, suggesting that the opportunity for the game industry to reinvent itself is now."

GDC Europe takes place on August 17th-19th in Cologne, Germany, ahead of the GamesCom Convention in the same city. Our colleagues from GamesIndustry.biz will be there in force, so watch this space (or that one) for news when the time comes.

Seeing as I've been hearing WiS isn't going to be this year and it isn't exactally 'new' - WoD seems the safter bet... however.. this could be somthing new

I'm reckoning world of darkness. It's been in development for 2 years and they've probably got something to show by now. Should be interesting. CCP have always got intriguing ideas. Looking forward to the announcement.

New "thin client" technology, wherein Eve discards the graphics entirely and runs purely as a plugin for Excel, but with extra Russians and griefing?

Hope World of Darkness is more like Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines (with community patches) and less like Eve.

How the heck could WoD be like Eve?

I am hoping for the Walking in Stations for Eve. I told myself that I wouldn't go back to Eve until WiS happens and I really would like to start playing Eve again :p

Actually, WoD would work perfectly as an EVE-clone. Vampires grow in power with time, just as the characters in Eve. And... well, that's the only immediate similarity.

Yup from the WoD books and what we've been speculating WoDO can actally be pulled out of EVE's core design quite easily. Mage, Werewolf and Vampire can bacisally be the three 'factions' of the game and EVE's sandbox nature fits and character growth with a roleplay world nicely, the only thing we don't know of is how the avitars would work HOWEVER with WiS in EVE it's not a huge leap to say that was a testbed not just for EVE but with WoDO too.

Yup, less spreadsheet, more well-written character based stuff. They're still not gonna come close to Bloodlines probably though, no game will I think.

Maybe it's EVE: Walking in Darkness. Vampires in outer space.

Actually, Walking is Darkness is a very cool name...

    Bloodlines was awesome, if flawed.

CCP can do no wrong imho... well... better just backup a boot.ini just in case ;p

    @ EG:

You're telling us about an announcement that's not been announced yet?
  • chudders #14 3 years ago

I play Eve and the prospect of walking in stations just seems a bit... pointless. Why would I want to spend 3 minutes walking to the mission office when I can just click on it?
