Card Fighters DS fixed

No bug in Euro version.

The European version of SNK Vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS won't launch with the game-breaking bug that's been crippling American copies.

But when exactly we'll be ale to play the game is still to be determined, with Ignition Entertainment promising us a definitive date "shortly".

Americans ran into problems on the ninth level of the game, when it crashed after an encounter with an opponent called Jon. Unfortunately the card you collect for completing this part was required to complete the adventure, rendering most people's games broken beyond repair.

SNK has since offered to replace copies in the US, but it's going to take up to six weeks for the freshly ordered replacements to arrive from Nintendo.

But then the game is dreadful. So it shouldn't bother you lot anyway.

Head over to our SNK Vs. Capcom Card Fighters review to find out why.

Erm... Hurrah? (Suppose this is good news for any journalists yet to review it - although most would rather not complete it if'n your review it to be trusted...)

So, maybe you guys should re-review it. It's only fair to the developers and potential customers.

This is Eurogamer, so you should review the PAL versions of games whenever possible. That way you wont confuse us by banging on about issues which only appear in versions of games that'll never see these shores.

    Now with bug fix:

    1.1/10

Good to know. I'll now be buying the game regardless of the review.
I would probably buy the thing even if all it had was Capcom and SNK character art so please don't mind me.

"i still have my handheld neogeo pocket version "

You could buy a NGPC and the original NGPC game for less than the price of the DS version.

It's a bloody DS game you moron, there is no "PAL" version.

But there is a European version...

I may not have played the game myself, but I can tell from everything everbody has been saying about it, even a bugged version, that the game doesn't deserve 1/10, so I'm calling as heavy bullshit on that review as I called on IGN's God Hand review. And you know, half of the reviews on this site are bullshit anyways. I'm glad I only come here for news.

Glad to hear the Euro version is bug free, since Ignition do the localisation, maybe they can fix the text while they're at it. Doubt it though, but the game still sounds worthwhile.

Well, reviews are opinions after all and therefore open to interpretation. Personally, I can forgive almost any fault if there is a strong plotline that grabs me. It's all a matter of opinion and personal taste - one mans trash is another mans treasure, after all. Some jack off over pretty graphics, others prefer some depth and gameplay to their titles.

For example, remember Angel of Darkness? Critical panning and a commercial one too, however it does have a cult following that swears blindly that it's the best Tomb Raider ever made. Is it wrong that they got enjoyment from a title that a lot of us failed to get?

I think the 1/10 was mainly because of the bug though. It sounds a bit naff, but I am of the mind that anything with a game-breaking bug like that deserves nothing more than 1/10, regardless how good or bad it is otherwise. Like Overblood 2 back in the day, I'm sorry but I really couldn't care less how good or bad it is - if it's got bugs that ruin the game, or even worse stop the game from running, it's broken and really shouldn't have been released anyway.

oh yeah, I remember that one. bloody lazy/nonexistent QA. i reckon some of these publishers just think that if it worked in the original version, it'll probably work after it's localised/PAL converted as well, so there's no need to test it again.

    First comment on review:

"I presume it gets a point for not actually melting your DS into a pile of plastic when you put the cartridge in."

    How Ironic.

    Why is that ironic?
  • Gojira #14 5 years ago

Since the review score was due to the game being fundamentally broken, it only seems right to re-review it when the official launch of the fixed version hits these shores.

That wasn't the sole reason it got 1/10, there are quite a few other weak points mentioned in the review. And after playing it, I have to agree.. it really is completely cack, and 1/10 still seems reasonable, bug or no bug.

I've been playing this. Without the killer bug it's probably a 4/10 game. The card battling stuff can get amusing and rather strategic, but it does suffer from a whole load of other bugs like incomprehensible translations and erm..... the lack of a game in itself bar the card battling.

I've not played the NGPC version, so I'm not biased by nostalgia. The card battling is a bit like Magic The gathering. A bit. But its the Capcom and SNK characters that do it for me to be honest - only reason I'm playing.
