Capcom ready to reveal new Onimusha? News

PlayStation 2 PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

2 July, 2009

Capcom may be teasing the imminent revelation of a brand new Onimusha game.

A teaser website presents three dates - 1560, 1573 and 1582 - before crossing them out and stamping 1600 in big, bold type on top.

It just so happens that those three dates correlate with the first three Onimusha instalments on PlayStation 2, in sequential order. And the presentation even matches the series', 1UP points out.

Onimusha is an action-adventure samurai series based on Japanese history with a supernatural slant. Key to the success of Onimusha is a mixture of third-person sword swishery and puzzle solving, a bit like Zelda.

A PlayStation 3 release - or indeed multiplatform, given Capcom's dedication to it - would be most welcome.

Go back in time to our Onimusha: Warlords, Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny and Onimusha 3: Demon Siege reviews for some background reading.

I really enjoyed Dawn of Dreams too, though it does feel like more of a spin-off than a new game. It's certainly been a long time coming though, even given fitting substituates like Genji PS3 to tide us over, and I for one look forward to it.

Would be very interested to see a current-gen version of Onimusha, provided Capcom make it fully 3D a la Resi 5 (I'm sure they would) and give it a decent combat engine, as well as a fair mixture of combat and puzzles. And please allow the hero to jump and generally be a bit more agile than the previous protagonists.

And keep it in Japan/the Far East. None of that Western time travel nonsense from 'Musha 3.

Edit - and bring it to PS360 please, not the Wii (or at least not Wii exclusive). I'd like to see this series sexy HDd up with brilliant graphics.

Got to say, I bought this series religiously. And yet, the Jean Reno version was reasonably disappointing and DoD was execrable. Bring back Jubei, I say.

Are they going to go all pre-rendered again with 1080p Blu-Ray backdrops? Hopefully not, actually.

Yeah the PS2 Genji was alright but the PS3 follow up is awful, clearly rushed if the excellent Folklore is anything to go by from the Game Republic teams.

Hmmm, I'll keep an eye out as the first was fun, certainly more fun and interesting than DMC which is hugely overrated IMO. I just never went mad over this series like some (still not played the 3rd one).

(Capcom are still in my bad books for RE5 though so it needs to be awesome!)

Oh damn I hope so. Onimusha is one of my favorite franchises from last gen. I bought and played all of the games on the PS2 and I have been hoping that Onimusha would make a return on the current gen consoles. PS3 or 360 please.
