Capcom bins Talisman adaptation

PSN, XBLA, PC game no more.

Capcom has permanently stopped work on Talisman for PSN, XBLA and PC.

The adaptation of the Games Workshop boardgame actually ground to a halt a couple of months ago, but, as Joystiq points out, no one noticed.

"After a misfire at the start, the details of which I won't get into, we evaluated several options for moving the project to new developers, but the costs of moving forward outweighed the potential revenue," said Christian Svensson, Capcom suit, on the official publisher forums.

"The rights have reverted back to Games Workshop where I hope someone will pick them up and try again. I too still would like to play a Talisman videogame."

Talisman is a fantasy-themed adventure boardgame for up-to six people. The idea is to go around bashing monsters and gaining power, eventually venturing to the centre of the board to take control of a powerful spell that kills the other players.

A pity... a great boardgame but to be honest the movies I saw of this looked very "meh" gameplay wise. A classic 2D version of this could really work, but their 3D approach looked a bit off.

    >*mumbles something about real life being a major inconvenience*

Dude! The real thing is a really awesome boardgame ;) Especially when people start backstabbing each other... that will never have the same feeling on Live ;)

My boardgame stack is next to my desk!

Talisman isn't as good as some new dungeon/RPG boardgames these days like TOMB, Runebound or Descent and it is so simple i don't think a computer version would have been that interesting.

On the other hand, i can't wait for Blood Bowl!

I never even knew they were doing this till I saw this article. Gutted - this was my fave boardgame!

Hmmm I play almost ALL dungeon board games and I don't really agree ;) Runebound and Descent are not for casual gamers... but yes, they would work as computer games since a lot of the (rather shitty) bookkeeping would be hidden.

I got down to the fourth paragraph reading every "Talisman" as "Taliban"

Must be more tired than I realised.

Talisman is too simple though, it's a luck fest. Prophecy is better these days, and maybe WoW The Adventure Game (Not the Boardgame).

My fave is TOMB though, although that is all about complex combat, as you say, not for casual gamers.

at first i thought "aww Capcom, you really screwed the pooch on this one"
but then i realised its probably for the best.
no-one can emulate what the adventuring style of Talisman played like or the supreme Gary Chalk artwork for that matter.
...plus, you cant roll a one and end up blind drunk and collapsed in a corner in a video game.

Aw, I'd have enjoyed that online.

Best moment was playing against my brother, watching him get all the way to the centre section, go through the Inner Region and just about make it, half dead, to the Valley of Fire. Then, just as he was about to advance and get the Crown of Command, I quietly pointed out that he did not have a Talisman.

    Boy, was he pissed.

Hmmm. I was disappointed at first, 'cos I have fond and ancient memories of the original board game.

But then I figured that if its going to be crap, its probably for the best. These things only get made once, so at least this way someone gets the chance to do a decent job.

I'm disappointed Talisman won't make it to xbla. But on the other hand the original boardgame takes FOREVER to finish and it's largely random. It's sorta like the gamer equivalent of monopoly.
