Call of Juarez demo Live News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

29 August, 2007

Those of you hiding in the Live undergrowth will have noticed a new demo for Wild West shooter Call of Juarez.

It's free to download, available everywhere except Mexico and Asia, and weighs in at 709MB.

The full game came out on 360 at the end of June and earned a hearty shot of whisky slid down the bar by us. In it you play as two characters, the gun-toting zealot Reverend Ray, and the young, stealthy offender Billy Candle.

What followed was a great blend of six-shooter madness and panicked hiding and thievery, although purists of either genre might say each component lacked a little something.

Swagger in to our Call of Juarez saloon to find out more.

I was going to rent this. I guess a demo will do the trick for the time being.

If you do get the game, and find it pretty bad during the first few hours, stick with it, it DOES get better

Does it really get better, or were you broken down, hour by hour ?

I heard the stealth sections were bloody awful (so often the way), but the rest of the game was pretty good and rather great in places.

from what I can tell, there are less stealth missions in the 360 version (not that many overall actually) , but my main annoyances from the game early on were:

-the swinging on whip mechanics (takes some getting used to)
-the mines (cant see shit in the Reverend Ray section, used cross-hairs turning red to tell where enemies where)
-one or two other really frustrating moments near the start

but yeah it become pretty great soon after, especially if you can rent it/ pick it up for cheap

Eurgh, what a lot of old rubbish. The graphics are poor with textures and modelling that would make the Xbox blush and there's no anti-aliasing plus plenty of v-sync tearing so technically it's sub-par. Plays average too. While I'm glad I got to finally see what the 360 version was like, I'm thankful I didn't make the mistake of buying the full game.

I loved it.

Was umming and ahhing about buying it and the demo made my mind up. Ordered it today!

Guess I just love Wild West stuff....

And proper in-game cutscenes from the same perspective as the game do wonders for immersion. I can forgive the old-style gameplay mechanics and the dodgy holding-box-in-mid-air-with-my-mind way of doing things purely for the quick draw bits. Shooting lanterns so they explode on fire is icing on the cake!

As is quoting scripture with the right-trigger while blasting away with the left!
