20,000 keys, one hour.

After more traffic than we can ever remember (and we used to live next to a roundabout), the Call of Duty: World at War beta keys are all gone! Congratulations if you got one.

In the end we had 20,000 of the things, and all of them were gone within an hour of posting them on the site. Despite a few hiccups earlier in the day, the servers even managed to maintain their dignity throughout. Well, mostly.

The good news, however, is that if you missed out you can still get a key by visiting GAME and pre-ordering Call of Duty: World at War. GAME pre-orders on Xbox 360 are guaranteed a key.

Basically this has been a week of crap as far as these beta/stresstest things go - putting the ad on the site gave a false impression to a lot of people and there have been NO answers to any questions until today. I know it's not really EG's doing (money comes from somewhere, after all) but the silence is the worst part - a lot of people have been waiting for this to go live.

buggrit: The ad says "soon" as well... but we can't go live until we're given the word from Activision & Microsoft. I know there were a few sites that put up fake stories about the beta being ready - but that's out of our control.

Apologies for the silence though - we are not allowed to communicate the exact time or date unfortunately. We were told "Friday at the earliest" and today were told "the start of next week".

Not a bad game but im already sick of the maps that are on the beta, some simple changes which i like for example, playing team deathmatch if i shoot the enemy but dont kill them but my shot does more damage i get 8 points and the person who gets the finishing shot gets 2 points. Instead of before where you would get 2 regardless of how good ya shot was obviously if you shoot someone in the leg your only gonna get 2 points as the person with the finishing shot is going to do more damage. Tanks annoyed the hell out of me. Also when you are on the American side Keifer sutherland does the voice. Ive never been so sick of him in my life it gets very repetitive very fast.

I thought I'd register for this.
Don't have a lot of faith in Treyarch yet, but the gameplay videos look good.
It's all about the mp levels, rest looks like COD4. Far for a problem though, as I'm very addicted to it!
If only there was a US wide block button.. or at least a mute option.

My COD beta code arrives just after midnight Sunday morning. There only appear to be a few thousand playing online at the moment.

It's great fun playing round the Japanese temples and gardens, and industrial wastelands / old trainyards.
Glad to report the online play is very similar to that of COD4 with online rankings enabling you to unlock extra weapons. A new feature is the ability to let go packs of dogs to hunt down your enemy prey. Get you pistol ready to fend them off.

I had registered online at Codyofduty.com previously and logged in to check on updates last week. The email arrived out of the blue with my redeem code arrived this morning. A friend tried using the same code and unfortunately it didn't work is they are obviously use only once.

Although they've promised they've sorted the servers out this time.

I've got on the beta tho and it does suck! God damn dogs all over the fucking place! They're like little bastard homing missiles!
and althought the maps are now much larger (which is a good thing) people do spawn camp so you hardly get to see it.

Just played a few hours of it. Got my code last night, simply by signing up for the COD:WOW site a few months ago.

Still don't know what to make of it.

To all the Treyarch haters out there: honestly, it's not bad. It does grow on you.

That said, it resembles COD4 multiplayer a lot. And I mean, a lot. Which presents two problems. Firstly, you think, I'm just playing a rebadged version of the last game. There's nothing new here. And secondly, you start noticing all the details they've missed out. The animation and art direction here are good, but nothing spectacular. The maps don't burn their way into your consciousness the same way that, say, Crash or Vacant did.

Love to hear what other COD4 aficionados make of it.

I just checked my mail and i have an unread message that enclosed is my cod 4 key! Completely forgot all about it!

I played COD 5 last night on my friends Xbox. The game looks pretty good, though not visually there yet. The maps are quite big and are played out on all types of levels from the trenches to the highest watchtower. Capture the flag is back from COD 3 which is a big yay! Molotov cocktails are nice, shame the enemy doesnt run around screaming like in postal 2.

The game is lagging a bit at the moment, yet im sure it will be perfect the time it goes on sale, i literally put a whole clip into someone and got nothing and then i randomly died. Wasn't impressed! Theres more vibration in your pad when firing guns and explosions going off. Gas can now be thrown and is pretty good as is the dogs you can release once you get a row of kills.

At the moment COD 5 multiplayer feels exactly like COD 4 with some new maps and weapons. I hope the single player makes it all worth while because i can see myself going back to cod 4 for multiplayer if cod 5 doesnt do something more definitive with the multiplayer.

Played this round my mates the other day, great fun. They've taken COD4 and just set it World War 2, on top of that there are some pretty cool tweaks, on TDM you can make a squad with your mates and they come up on your compass as a bright blue and so does there GT so you know where your mates are instantly, plus it isolates the chat function too (and you can stay in the squad within the same game lobby so your sweet once its setup). You can turn off auto aim completely. And we will get BETA keys, just there doing a stress test so we might have to wait a bit till they allow these "giveaways" to release the codes. Might be later on today or probably tomorrow

Eurogamer themselves have said the keys will be available no earlier than 15:30GMT - latest being 18:30GMT iirc.

The link to get a key will be on the frontpage so this barrage of "ZOMG GIEF KEY PLX" needs to stop...

Eurogamer themselves have said the keys will be available no earlier than 15:30GMT - latest being 18:30GMT iirc.

The link to get a key will be on the frontpage so this barrage of "ZOMG GIEF KEY PLX" needs to stop...

Of course, nobody will read this as it'll get buried in a pile of the above.

I'm looking forward to this beta, COD4 was good but my God did I hate that helicopter that you could call in after 7 kills. It destroyed the balance of the game and was way too powerful and could find you even in cover. It's so cheap, I think Infinity ward did not count on people getting 7 kills so frequently, that fucking chopper is in the air for the majority of every game.

The dogs are much nicer, at least on paper...can't wait to try it out.

*gets killed by wave after wave of Nazi attack dogs*

I got my key last night in the mail out of the blue, happy days...I remember having to go through the mayhem of scraping for a beta key for COD4.
Played it this morning and it's quite a lot different, think it will be just as good fun.

One thing though, the dogs are not nice, you hear the barking and then proceed to poo self not knowing where they'll come from... +3 for popping a cap in their poop chutes though

I played the CoD5 Beta at a friends house. The dogs are less powerful then the heli, but they are still vicious. I especially like the kill cam for the dogs. You can see yourself frantically attempting to shoot at them before their massive jaws finish you.

I got a key just about as there was only 3k left within 30mins!! I had to drive home from work like a lunatic to make sure I didn't miss out, I think I caused an accident and had to jump a red light or two but at least I am in the beta!

Seems a bit strange that the release time insured that the entire US was up and ready to leach them all no doubt to shove on ebay. How about helping out people in Europe next time by releasing them at an ealier time here, gutted for the people on there way home who have missed out.

Srsly, you had to sleep this over to miss it....at around 18:00 there were 8k keys left, since I got mine at that hour, and it didn't even take me 3 refreshes

Dont bother paying! I've just had a go of the beta and all i can say is "cod 4 map pack" extension!!

If you like cod 4 you will like this,.... If you like games like battlefield bad company, where a grenade actually destroys a wall... then you probably think its much the same with a few different bad guys for a change...

Not awe inspiring at all (and I liked cod 4).... just feels like an add on rather than something new....

Sounds ungrateful i know...
maybe its cuz im a bit **** at the game too!

Been playing this lots. I think a re-skinned COD is a bit harsh. Most of the original perks are there but in slightly different forms. Instead of a helicopter strike, you unleash the dogs. They are vicious little bastards too. Jumping through windows and scaring the shit out of you.

There's also the tanks, which are a good laugh. I'm sure there's more to it. The flamethrower could be very entertaining. I also believe you can go underwater and leap out and shoot/knife people, but I may be wrong.

All the people who were worried about the developers messing it up may now complain that it's the same as COD4. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. I love the multiplayer side of it but also hope the single player can live up to it. There's also co-op to look forward too.

Hell, any game where you have Jack Bauer shouting down your ear ain't all bad.

I wouldn't say that this is just a re-skinned COD4, it uses the same engine but the weapon balance has been changed for the better imo IW created the perk system and the engine and Treyarch seem to have added quite nicely to it. SP plus 13 MP maps at launch and on top of that being able to do your best Mr Burns impression when you "release the hounds" should be worthy of 40 quid and 4 player co-op to boot! roll on 14th November!

As someone who's wasted DAYS of his life on COD4 multiplayer, this is a bit disappointing.

At no point have I felt gripped by the action onscreen. Not once. It just feels like I'm going through the motions.

The graphics aren't there either. Ok, so they've slung a few sunrays in there. Big fucking deal. The rest is so underwhelming. The animations veer towards the John Cleese. And the maps are pitifully weak, too. Each one of 'em is about as memorable as an Esso petrol station.

On the plus side, they've been clever about fairness. Remember when you used to practically kill someone in COD4, and a teammate used to sneak the last shot in, bagging all the points? Well, that's been rectified. You now get points based on your contribution to the kill. Do all the legwork, and you'll get six or even eight points towards the kill, rather than a measly two.

I nearly got sacked due to spending all day bashing F5 but got home and got there!! managed to pre-warn some friends also and we all got one!! Really enjoying COD5 its not perfect but its BETA for god sake!! liking what they did to combat kill stealing.. as that was one of the most annoying things about COD4. The only thing they havent sorted is the Knifing, you can apparently press it even when your not facing someone and get a knife kill.. its frustrating! Thanks again EG

Just got a go in.

It's actually pretty good, only played 2 but excellent maps so far and loving going back to old weapons, this rewind to WWII will sit nicely along side COD4 for MP alone (i expect not to finish SP for the lure of online again!).

Anyway cheers again EG and Activision/Treyarch (and well done for a good game), I dunno how the full game will turn out but I'm sold. Dogs, bloody simple but bloody brilliant!

/ still dreams of what joys COD6 will bring, maybe dogs armed with M4's ........

Me and my mates hammered this site Monday night and scooped 6 codes so we could form a party. It amuses me how EG state that the servers held out, as there was a lot of errors coming up on our web browsers! Got a spare code from callofduty.com since but I've given it away to a friend. I'd still suggest signing up there if you want a code. Anyway thanks EG, that's 2 years in a row I've got in the COD betas from this site.

TBH if you didnt get a code your not really missing out.
Basically COD4 reskinned. Nothing really original has been introduced, same ol' perk system etc.

Only thing that will save it for me is how well worth the money the single player co-op is.
