Sounds great!

I'd like to know, have they kept the aiming mechanic of the previous CoD games on the 360 pad? IE, pull left trigger to look down the gun sights? I found that much better than clicking the right stick in R6:Vegas

"The Middle-East warzone is just begging to be torn apart - walls fall down, cover splinters inches from your back and the enemy isn't so much tactical as completely fearless."

Does this mean that they didn't bother with intelligent AI, and just made enemies that charge at you, screaming?

If they haven't gotten rid of the stupid re-spawning enemies yet there's no way I'll buy this. Lamest way to increase longevity ever.

I'm still trying to finish CoD2 on veteran and its the most I've played a game on live. Sometimes I wish you could just nuke everybody on SP and MP. Looking forward to this.

The text makes it sound great but the pictures are putting me off. It looks too much like Rainbow Six and the like which, while I love, I don't really need more of.

This looks pretty interesting. Never really got into the COD series due to WW2 burnout setting in after umpteen 'medal of gonorrhea' games.

this preview focsses mostly on the multiplayer and I would be interested to see how it stack up next to battliefield bad company which looks similarly interesting.

Can anyone confirm presence of aforementioned 'lame' re-spawning enemies?

cod2 pissed me off with the stupid artificial respawning enemies - a poor substitute for tactical nous, and after breezing through the first two chapters, the final chapter pissed me off with the ridiculous 'we can fit 500 german troops in one house' style. Literally sitting there for 20 minutes killing hundreds of german troops from range is fun for a while, but you could never approach the bloody house (grrrr...) Improve the underlying combat! Halo wasn't good because it was graphically strong and had nice set-pieces - it was good because it was a good game engine underneath.

Bet the PC gets the shitty end of the stick on this one, it'll be made for console, then ported over.

I hare re-spawning enemies too. But now I think on it, that probably accurately reflects modern warfare, don't you think?

@Hugundo

Many years back I had the misfortune of reading some random Delta Force 2 forum thread. I recall a kid on there telling other players how they weren't "a proper sniper" because they weren't prepared to sit unmoving in a voxel bush for 20 mins. Proper sniper indeed. Hehehe, the internet is funny.

On the other hand, before the original Call Of Duty came out I thought "what can they add that Medal Of Honor hasn't done already?", and then the game came out and it was terrific...

As with so many others, it was the respawning that wrecked much of the fun in the previous effort. It made it relentless and hectic, yes, but it was also totally ruined the atmosphere that every other facet of the game seemed to promote and is an especially frustrating desgin decision made worse by its inconsistency.

I agree with the Halo comment. There was always the possibility of altering your approach to any given situation by concentrating on different enemies and picking your way through them one at a time. It's about time other games followed suit.

Yhea the game will more likelly rock except if there is a huge AI prob that cant be seen on the Videos. And for those with Xbox live they will find a really nice video of the game in there. It look amazing and smart. Hope it works out for them to abbandon WWII all of a sudden. Id be happy to play something new as well from them

"We're really focusing on getting novice players into Call of Duty - a lot of people think that it's just for the hardcore,"

stop it! just stop it alright! don't water it down to let people who don't know how to play games play. it'll ruin the damn game. why's pro evo so popular, because it's mother fucking straight up hardcore.

Finally! It should really be called CoD3 though, because that terrible joke of a game didn't deserve to kiss the ass of the cleaner at Infinity Ward.

Oh well - screw all the other modern combat iraqistan look-alikes - this is going to be the real deal.

Hmm. Not sure whether the moment hasn't passed, culturally speaking, to release a Middle East fps title - it would have been a guaranteed top seller back when pulling down a statue of Saddam seemed like a big deal.

Never mind, I'm sure the chance to 'cap teh ragheds yo LOL' will sell plenty of copies to teenage American numpties, at least until they're old enough to enlist for real and get 'pwned' by a roadside bomb (respawned in the VA hospital, eh?). Perhaps we should just be grateful it's not another f**king WWII title. Even the presentational polish and technical excellence of 'Company of Heroes' couldn't interest me after being bombarded by so many identikit WWII games. Oh God, the cliches. Make it stop!

Call me irresponsible, but maybe admir's onto something ('Mortyr' doesn't count, anyway it was shite) - after all, 'Cross of Iron' was a great movie from the German perspective without being pro-Nazi or glorifying war (*cough Saving Private Ryan cough*). A decent game thoughtfully done needn't turn into 'Triumph of the Will' with bumpmapping. We get 'Silent Hunter III' and 'Panzers', so why not an fps?

It might have been safe by now to trade on reputation alone, but Modern Warfare 2 demo has the elegance, intelligence and poise - not to mention the sense of streamlined chaos - that only comes from hard work. Its snowy mountaintops and blizzard-swept bases dazzle at 1080p and 60fps, but an extended preview behind closed doors suggests that the real standout element is the way Infinity Ward's game tugs you along as it slips invisibly from one encounter to the next, varying the approach, restacking the odds, and changing the rules so confidently you hardly notice it.
