Cage talks Trophies in Heavy Rain

"We found a solution."

David Cage has made his peace with Sony's Trophy system for PlayStation 3, despite past concerns that it was at odds with the creative goals of his ambitious adventure game Heavy Rain.

"We found a solution," he told Eurogamer at gamescom today. "We understand that it can be important for many players and we wanted to support the system anyway, so we found something that is not destructive for the game, where you're not disturbed by the Trophies as you play."

When we spoke to Cage at developer Quantic Dream's Paris studio late last year, he told us that the Trophy system of giving players sparkly rewards for completing certain tasks was "not exactly what we're trying to achieve".

In the end though, it sounds as though the solution was simple: "We will probably display them between the scenes, so you know what you've achieved, but at the same time isn't an obstruction as you play," he explained today.

We're seeing Heavy Rain in more depth tomorrow, so look out for updates on the remaining two of the game's four playable characters - private detective Scott Shelby and soon-to-be-troubled father Ethan Mars - once we've gone through that.

In the meantime, check out our most recent Heavy Rain hands-on.

Don't see how Trophies will work in a game that has different paths. Can you get a trophy for keeping your character alive as well as a trophyfor continuing the story after your character dies?
Please, no 'Find 100 hidden bags' trophies.

I think you get a trophy for every ten minutes you sit there believing that Cage can come good on an interactive story that has both good gameplay and involving narrative. I've been wrong plenty of times on things before, but I've been right too, and I can see no way that this can be done.

I don't see the problem, Fallout has diferent Achievements for diferent playthroughs. Well... come to think of it, loads of games have Achievements which requires more than one playthrough.

Fallout isn't a narrative driven game though, Fallout is small pieces of missions that you can do at your own pace.

This is a heavily narrative driven game.

Previously I was very dead excited about the game, but I think what lessens its a bit for me is EVERY time David Cage opens his mouth and out comes arty farty stuff that I find too much of a 'I just love my game and you should love it'! I mean all devs do this right? Most of them would be devoted to their games but somehow David just seems to make it as if he was the only one?

Perhaps its just me... still keen on the game though but concerned too much of a QTE, I played his previous game on Xbox and I liked it but he did get side tracked and one playthrough was enough. Would Heavy Rain invite several playthroughs without getting worn down from QTE button pressings?

    We ll see.

Fallout 3 was openworld but no matter which path you took, you could still finish the same quest or possibly not do it at all.
I see what you mean and I guess it could work if whatever you do leads to the same end. However, if what you do changes the story ahead (as I believe to be the case) you would have to play through more than once. So yeah, you're right and I guess this is the point in trophies.

"why do i continue to be non-excited for this game? "

Because you can't polish a QTE?

Most truthful and coherent sentence you've ever wrote, Donnie.

The ridiculous track-n-field button-mashing segments that ruined Fahrenheit utterly we're tailor-made for trophies/achievements, so if there's more of the same here what's he worried about?
