Buy a real Companion Cube

Weighted for your affection.

Valve has said it will be selling a real life cuddly Weighted Companion Cube in its store soon.

A sneak peak of the loveable block appeared on Steam last Friday, although no price was mentioned and it was listed only as "coming soon".

You will also be able to snaffle up a pair of cubes to hang from your rear-view mirror in your car, presumably so that other motorists can honk affectionately at you as they zoom past.

The Weighted Companion Cube plays a starring role in puzzle game Portal, and forms a strong emotional attachment with you but doesn't speak whatever it says.

Portal joined Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode 1, Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2 in The Orange Box. If you have a 360, PS3 or PC and haven't already picked it up, then do so now.

Pop over to The Orange Box review if you want more coercing.

I hope you lot don't betray this one like you did the one in portal. You evil basts.
  • Fitzmogwai #6 4 years ago

Amused by the blurb underneath the cube puff:

"Like aliens? UFO Afterlight is available for 50% off this weekend!"

Shouldn't that be "Hate aliens and enjoy shooting them repeatedly in the head? UFO Afterlight is available for 50% off this weekend!"

In other news: that's my Christmas shopping then.

    Edit for crappy typing.

It was an accident! I pressed the button and then i was like lets play catch with my beautiful cube and then it accidently fell into the incinerator and i cried.

Watch out! Companion Cubes can really be sneaky bastards and try to stab you as demonstrated in this video:

Actually, you won't. It's against the law in this country these days to have stuff dangling in front of your windscreen. If you hang dice, or indeed weighted companion cubes, there, the police will pull you over and ask you to remove them.

I wander this earth knowing I am alone in the world.

For I know that I'm the only Portal player so far THAT DIDN'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THE STUPID CUBE.

I mean come on guys, it's a crate. I don't care if it has a heart on it. I spent that whole level waiting for something cool to happen (that didn't involve all the cool stuff in every other level.) I was robbed.

    Unless you're Asian??

They should have made the cube talk little blurbs like the turrets do... like "Hello" and "I love you"... then maybe I would have felt something for that sci-fi techy looking crate... but it didn't, so I don't... :D

I'll still get this though :p

Companion cubes are rubbish. Everyone knows cake is where it's at.
  • finty13 #19 4 years ago

Throw some free cake into the deal and I may think about it.

Nallen, you are not alone, but you and I are the last of a secret people. It was a box. GLaDOS' dialogue made that bit good, the cube was just a cube. I chucked that thing in the fire without regret or hesitation (other than "I bet whatever happens next will be a lot easier with a box to heft around...but I clearly can't take it along, so into the fire with it";). No mercy for the weak.

Someone needs to tell all the Sikhs that park outside the Gurdwara along the road from me that it's illegal to hang stuff on the mirror. Most cars have at least 3 bits of religious paraphernalia dangling distractingly from the mirror stalk. I expect the only reason they don't get pulled over is that their BMWs and Mercedes have tinted rear windows so the cops don't see it (or are just too scared of racial harrassment complaints to enforce the law).

Where are the huggable sentry guns, eh?
